Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

If you can't change it might be because you have a pending schedule change that needs to be acknowledged.
I got errors on the CX website but ended up checking Finnair which told me about the changes (change in block time by 5 minutes). Then I was able to access the change screen on CX.
CX are releasing some A/C/D/I space but mainly for close-in departures. I doubt there will be many chances to move flights by more than a few days.

Booked in D rt DAD-JFK.
I'm happy with what I have right now, but would prefer to cut the YVR stop I have on the return to Asia. According to EF, there are two D fares available JFK-HKG-DAD (I searched as one, not single segments) but CX's website is quoting like 13K to change. SOL I'm assuming.
Anyone have luck changing from JFK to EWR? I'd prefer to fly from EWR for the 350 vs JFK, but one can dream right?
I'm happy with what I have right now, but would prefer to cut the YVR stop I have on the return to Asia. According to EF, there are two D fares available JFK-HKG-DAD (I searched as one, not single segments) but CX's website is quoting like 13K to change. SOL I'm assuming.
Anyone have luck changing from JFK to EWR? I'd prefer to fly from EWR for the 350 vs JFK, but one can dream right?

Example: Searching the above routing, if I choose the exact same flights I'm on the day prior, it is now pricing out as a $99.94 difference to change the date essentially. If I choose the earlier HKG-JFK flight (which shows D2 on EF), it quotes over 12K.

Not quite sure either. Since I only saw EWR once in my search, maybe it shouldn't be showing up when JFK is searched. Thus CX not allowing you to switch is correct?
Also not sure about the 12k upfare since I haven't read the rules for the business fare.

No, most likely you have to go through Expedia, at least until you've flown the first segment. I booked through Priceline and when playing around with "change booking" on the CX site (just to try it out, I don't want to change anything at the moment), it gave an error saying that the ticket was purchased through a non-CX channel (I forgot the exact wording) and to contact that travel agent for any changes. In the past I've made changes to flights booked on Priceline/Expedia directly with the airline after I've flown the first segment, but I'm not sure if that's a general rule or just worked in the cases where I tried.

Thats what i figured. I found a date with A availability and tried to use Expedia to change it but its quoting +$8k in fare difference and the $100 change fee. Was hoping there was a way to make the change through Cathay. I want to change my first flight so cant wait until i fly the first leg
