CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

I’ve been thinking about taking the last segment or not and sure when you find a little mileage run here or there, and drop a last segment no airline carrier ever goes after you. I have made dummy bookings to get in the lounges and drop last segment many times. And for those of you who said that it’s not been tried in courts are incorrect. A Spanish court ruled that throwaway ticketing is not illegal in a legal sense. Also the skiplag.com guy who was sued by United and Orbitz won and the court ruled that throwaway ticketing was not illegal. But because of the publicity of this fare, I wonder if CX will go to great lengths to ensure people take the last segment one way or another if you’re on the mistake fare?

Furthermore if you are planning on dropping the last segment and going from Hong Kong to wherever, DO NOT book CX flights on the same day. This could be found as a duplicate booking by computers and you could be flagged, or your reservation cancelled.
While I agree CX will most likely not sue, the US court said no such thing. It simply said it does not have jurisdiction. ("Chicago Judge John Robert Blakey of the Northern District Court of Illinois said the court didn't have jurisdiction over the case because Zaman didn't live or do business in that city." -CNN)

The most CX would likely do is to declare the ticket canceled and not award the FF miles. (Simply telling AA or other partners you did not fly would likely be enough for AA to not give you the miles. I doubt AA would go against CX on this fare. Not sure about other airlines.) Even then, it just might not be worth it to CX to bother with arguing miles.

It comes down to how risk-averse you are... While I think anyone would likely be fine not flying the last segment, I am not willing to risk it. (At least for now.)

The above poster is correct, the Chicago court did not rule throwaway ticketing was valid. However him winning his lawsuit, and Orbitz and United giving up says something.

Regarding BA, they are known to be extremely vindictive against travelers and canceling every mistake fare ever. They also always try to penny pinch the traveler when BA makes a mistake. They are probably the most anti-Customer airline out there. I had an agent accidentally charge me $25 phone fee for booking an AS award. BA refused to refund the fee. So comparing BA to ANY airline is pointless. Not to mention when BA has been wrong the UK government has a history of always siding with them. So using BA as an example I don’t think makes any good points.

In addition a Spanish Supreme Court ruled throw away ticketing was not illegal. https://www.godsavethepoints.com/201...g-skiplagging/

As far as if I plan to skip the last segment, I will have to think about it as well. I’ll also have to evaluate my health that day because I can only travel first class. Since there is no first class from HKG-SGN, this might exacerbate my symptoms.

Lufthansa! Recently they actually sued someone [and lost the case pending appeal].

I know a mileage broker who had a customer that booked dummy United flights to get into the lounges, and then cancelled the refundable tickets after enjoying the lounges.

United sent him a bill for $5600. The guy showed it to an attorney who laughed and told him to throw it away and United did not pursue. As someone posted above, proving intent in a court of law is extremely difficult. Nobody can know what you’re thinking except for you and Ms. Cleo.

Depends where you live and what you value. But I think most people would say AS. It’s probably the most valuable point currency out there since they don’t do the stupid EQD thing, you can use their miles to experience Emirates F (a thing everyone must do once in their life) and the last US airline to have fair F and J amounts for award redemptions. .

What if I am travelling with my wife, and only one of us tried to change the onward flight HKG-HAN to a later time on the same date, again would CX's JFK staff allow the person with the longer layover to short-check their bag, and the one who is on the shorter connection to check bags all the way through to Vietnam? Is it possible to change the onward flight for only 1 pax if the original reservation is for 2 or 3 people? If yes, would I have to do that over the phone?
This is a tough call. You really don’t know what the agents at JFK will do. You could say something like there’s important medicine that I need every 24 hours in my bag or some BS like that so we need to collect our bags in HKG, But you don’t know how the agents are going to respond at Kennedy. I do not condone any of these practices.

At the end of the day you’re taking a gamble and you don’t know what the outcome is going to be.

I would advise everyone to try to pack as little as possible to fit in a carry-on backpack to avoid checking bags if you plan on skipping the last segment. This is the only way you can guarantee that your bags will be OK. Someone also suggested that if things do go wrong, and your bags end up in Vietnam, and you go somewhere else, you can say you had to go to the hospital and fly home so you don’t know what to do now that your bags are in Vietnam. I’m not sure it’s the most ethical thing, and I’m not condoning it, but somebody did suggest it.

I don’t want to get yelled at by anybody. I do not condone unethical, or illegal practices but these are answers to peoples questions. I’m not the moral police.

Wasn’t that about using coupons out of sequence, ie dropping the first leg and attempting to get on the second leg?

I think anyone not using this fare to visit VN twice is missing out! What a gorgeous country with extremely hospital folks and amazing food!

That said, i have traveled for work for a couple decades and have a graveyard full of abandoned tickets to my name. I have abandoned them at all stages, one segment in, two segments in, the last segment. And I’ve abandoned a ticket on nearly every global airline at some point.

My experiences are many, but not one of them aligns with the scare stories I see above. My plans changed, I got sick, an airline was failing to get me where I needed to go fast enough, and I’ll admit it, sprinkled in there were a few cases where i bought a ticket because it was cheaper and I didnt need the return or the last segment or two. Many times I tell the carrier my plans have changed other times I just no show. I’ve never gotten any feedback while speaking with them to cancel that suggests the airlines interpret their contacts of carriage as some here do and I have never gotten a bill or been denied FF credit where i just abandoned one or more segments. In fact quite the opposite! On more than a few occasions I've gotten a credit back for a segment I didnt fly. If you miss enough flights, some percentage of them will have a problem which might actually justify you going your own way AND getting compensation, even if you made the decision to dirch long in advance. I think maybe 15% of the time something happens that allows me to claim back the cost apportioned to one or more dropped segments. I’ve even been proactively contacted by airlines asking me if I want a refund for the unused segments, on a totally nonrefundable ticket, where I had walked away from the ticket and taken another flight by that carrier.

I know there are a number of folks here who are “by the book” and who love to quote some section or another of the airline’s CoC, but I doubt any of them have much experience dropping segments. I’m flying every segment on this deal, but if I weren’t i wouldn’t be all that concerned about it.

Is it possible to travel the return (JFK to HAN) without my traveling partner?

Also - if going twice to Vietnam - Do I file for the e-visa and then once I leave file for another e-visa or would it be better to obtain a multi entry visa through an embassy? (I know this has been discussed repeatedly, but I guess I just need reassurance)

Thanks!

After having a pretty great trip on QR from EDI to PEN recently, I don't think this is entirely accurate

Some people have been giving examples that nothing happen when they give up the last segment on other tickets or Mileage run. Those are regular/sales fare. And not mistake fare.

In this case, this is a mistake fare n we won’t know what CX will do when people drop the last segment. They might do something to recover their cost since they have honor the contract and would expect the pax to do the same.

Not at all true... I’ll give two specific examples.

Remember the eXCMB Etihad F mistake? I think it was CMB-DFW. After a series of schedule changes, my AUH-JFK and JFK-DFW segments didnt align and so I called Etihad repeatedly as the trip approached and they did nothing. In the end I sent a complaint to the DOT and requested a much better JFK-LAX-DFW routing be added. That worked nice for us, JFK-LAX was on the 32T in first, comfortable after the long journey from CMB. Never flew the last segment to DFW and told AA at JFK to short check bags to LAX and they did.

Last summer we flew another error fare that had been around for a long time under the radar, also stepped off the plane and let AA know we would be continuing on and they actually asked if i wanted to reticket w a stopover (it was an unrestricted fare and so allowed that for no cost). We passed and they just cancelled the ticket.

Sorry if I dare to say this, but this is completely not true. As all the other airlines, every mistake has its own story, BA recently honoured a First class fare JNB-BCN (at very similar price like CX) and also a biz class fare EDI-PEN (at similar price but in C this time).

Why should we always be apocalyptic in talking about the airlines? it would be easier just sticking to reality....

Just look at NZ which has been very strict in honouring fares lately.... but.... last week they said they'll honour the ORD-SYD deal.
I repeat.... it would be definitely better avoiding to trace pattern for mistake fares.... there is NO common pattern at all.
