Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

From everything I've read on FT, I have not seen an airline successfully re-price a ticket and force a flyer to pay for the adjusted price of that ticket after skipping a flight. If that isn't the case, I haven't seen that thread and would love to read it so I can further understand the risks involved.

Do not simply skip your last leg. I always cancel check-in for my last leg after getting into HKG and then you can simply cancel the rest of your itinerary on their app or website (aka the last segment cancelled). You will likely not get credit for the last flight (my past 3/4 skipped leg on CX/KA was not credited as it shows "passenger not found on flight")

Do not simply skip your last leg. I always cancel check-in for my last leg after getting into HKG and then you can simply cancel the rest of your itinerary on their app or website (aka the last segment cancelled). You will likely not get credit for the last flight (my past 3/4 skipped leg on CX/KA was not credited as it shows "passenger not found on flight")
I am going to skip the last segment either way, likely, but don't want to force cancellation and risk potential mileage earning of the last flight flow (JFK-HKG), for example, by cancelling itinerary, since I am crediting to AA.

Example from 2018 - I had a problem with QR not crediting one of my flights. I had to first go to the online tool, file for the missing segment. It came back from QR that the credit went to a QR account - which I don't have. (QR said I did.) AA first advised to talk to QR. That was a waste of time. After back and forth with QR (which can be skipped) I called AA and talked to someone in the Advantage department explaining I wanted credit. They seemed very used to this happening. They took some notes and handled it back channel. A few days later I had my credit. (My friend found an agent who knew how to call QR directly and his credit was instant.)
So if you do not get credit from a OW partner...
1. Fill out the online form and wait for it to get rejected.
2. Call AA and say you talked to partner and got nowhere.
3. Let them take your info.
4. Check back and you most likely you will get credit.

Just want to confirm, with no status on American or Alaskan, would it be best to credit to Alaska for more miles?? (I just signed up for FF accounts for each of them) I am flying HAN-HKG-YVR and back with the HKG-YVR on Cathay and the other segment on Vietnam airlines

3.3.1 The Ticket you have purchased is valid only for the transportation as shown on the Ticket, from the place of departure via any Agreed Stopping Places to the final destination. The fare you have paid is based upon our Tariff and is calculated on the basis of the entire journey shown on the Ticket. It forms an essential part of our contract with you. The Ticket will not be honoured and will lose its validity if the Coupons (or flights mentioned in the Ticket) are not used in the sequence provided in the Ticket. For example, where you commence your journey at any stopover or agreed stopping place.
3.3.2 Should you wish to change any aspect of your transportation you must contact us in advance. The fare for your new transportation will be calculated and you will be given the option of accepting the new price or maintaining your original transportation as ticketed. Should you be required to change any aspect of your transportation due to Force Majeure, you must contact us as soon as practicable and we will use reasonable efforts to transport you to your next Stopover or final destination, without recalculation of the fare.
3.3.3 Should you change your transportation without our agreement, we will assess the reasonable price for your actual travel. You will be required to pay any difference between the price you have paid and the total price applicable for your revised transportation. We will refund you the difference if the new price is lower but otherwise, your unused Coupons have no value.
Force Majeure is defined in the CoC:
“FORCE MAJEURE” means unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond our or your control, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all due care had been exercised.
you are correct that no one can force you to take a flight. But at the same time they can reprice it under the contract. Note with force majeure they don't agree to waive any reprice - just to transport you to your final place at a later date. (Possibly when you don't take the flight at a later datre they can trigger the reprice.)

I would just caution people who are checking bags or even not checking bags to be careful. I’m wondering if to thwart people from dropping the last segment, they will force all checked baggage to go to the final destination no matter what because they know that people might drop the final segment.
I’ve been thinking about taking the last segment or not and sure when you find a little mileage run here or there, and drop a last segment no airline carrier ever goes after you. I have made dummy bookings to get in the lounges and drop last segment many times. And for those of you who said that it’s not been tried in courts are incorrect. A Spanish court ruled that throwaway ticketing is not illegal in a legal sense. Also the skiplag.com guy who was sued by United and Orbitz won and the court ruled that throwaway ticketing was not illegal. But because of the publicity of this fare, I wonder if CX will go to great lengths to ensure people take the last segment one way or another if you’re on the mistake fare?
Furthermore if you are planning on dropping the last segment and going from Hong Kong to wherever, DO NOT book CX flights on the same day. This could be found as a duplicate booking by computers and you could be flagged, or your reservation cancelled.
