Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

I don’t see how they can reprice if you skip the last segment. I’ve done it tons of times on AA, HU, and EK mileage runs. Nobody can force you to get on a plane and people can come of with a million excuses why they couldn’t take the last segment. CX cannot “reprice” the ticket if you can’t take the last leg because you get sick and have a doctors note
3.3 COUPON SEQUENCE
3.3.1 The Ticket you have purchased is valid only for the transportation as shown on the Ticket, from the place of departure via any Agreed Stopping Places to the final destination. The fare you have paid is based upon our Tariff and is calculated on the basis of the entire journey shown on the Ticket. It forms an essential part of our contract with you. The Ticket will not be honoured and will lose its validity if the Coupons (or flights mentioned in the Ticket) are not used in the sequence provided in the Ticket. For example, where you commence your journey at any stopover or agreed stopping place.
3.3.2 Should you wish to change any aspect of your transportation you must contact us in advance. The fare for your new transportation will be calculated and you will be given the option of accepting the new price or maintaining your original transportation as ticketed. Should you be required to change any aspect of your transportation due to Force Majeure, you must contact us as soon as practicable and we will use reasonable efforts to transport you to your next Stopover or final destination, without recalculation of the fare.
3.3.3 Should you change your transportation without our agreement, we will assess the reasonable price for your actual travel. You will be required to pay any difference between the price you have paid and the total price applicable for your revised transportation. We will refund you the difference if the new price is lower but otherwise, your unused Coupons have no value.
Force Majeure is defined in the CoC:
“FORCE MAJEURE” means unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond our or your control, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all due care had been exercised.
you are correct that no one can force you to take a flight. But at the same time they can reprice it under the contract. Note with force majeure they don't agree to waive any reprice - just to transport you to your final place at a later date. (Possibly when you don't take the flight at a later datre they can trigger the reprice.)

Just a data point. I always fly PEK-HKG-ORD in CX paid J becus they sells PEK origin ticket for 2200USD RT. I always drop the last HKG-PEK leg. It has been 3 years in a row and no one came for my money. After you get off you get to Hong Kong, go to CX website, cancel check in to your last leg and cancel the ticket after will do.

I suspect you will find this in many airlines' CoC's, and you are technically correct, but the question (obviously) is whether CX intends to enforce this statute. We will likely hear very quickly from people who drop legs in this itinerary as to whether CX chases them down for funds.
I believe the action is to close the FF account. Can't remember what they are doing regarding chasing payment though.

Just for the record when I say “party on the plane” i’m not talking about bringing a mariachi band onto the plane and having the flight attendants have to be inconvenienced or overburdened because of us.
What I mean is an opportunity for us to meet each other on board and maybe share a glass of champagne together. It would be nothing that would be overbearing to the flight attendants. Or add undo stress to their jobs. I don’t know if people are interested in onboard meetings and share a glass of bubbly but it’s just a suggestion.

There is precedent with British Airways cracking down on 'cheap' biz class ex Europe (and passengers dropping the last flight back to Europe to stay in London).
I believe the action is to close the FF account. Can't remember what they are doing regarding chasing payment though.

The CX F seat, with the inclusion of the buddy seat, is designed to allow groups of 2 to socialise over a meal or glass of bubbles. However, the cabin itself is a small space so large groups socialising may be more difficult to do without disturbing others.

Right - I don't believe I've seen a single airline chase down more than one or two people dropping the final legs of a flight for a fare reprice, which is what the CoC suggests. I don't think CX would be able to successfully convince AS to clawback airline miles, but perhaps this will be an exception.
I guess it all comes down to risk appetite. Dropping the last leg is not entirely without risk (if it were then we wouldn’t be discussing it here). So as long as people know this, then it’s up to them to make the judgement call and decide whether they wish to fly as ticketed or not.

Yes, it is in the CoC. And 100% the airline can close your FF account for this - or any or no - reason.
However, AFAIK it has not been tested in the courts. My guess is the airlines don't want to go there. They have a good thing going with gouging passengers in hub cities / more popular cities. A court ruling striking down this part of the CoC would be very costly. (Taken a step further, it could also be the precedent that some smart lawyer uses to eliminate the rule that you must fly all segments or face the cancellation of the remaining segments.)
Quick example - for years flying LAX-DEN-NYC on UA was much cheaper than flying DEN-NYC on the same UA flights. For UA to try an show they were damaged NOT flying someone 3 hours from LAX-DEN-LAX with the ability to resell the seat to someone else would be a tall order.
Right now airlines have the best of both worlds - charging segments within a full route more money (UA DEN-NYC, or CX HKG-JFK), selling the individual segments for more money (UA DEN-NYC or CX HKG-JFK vs UA LAX-DEN-NYC or CX HAN-HKG-JFK) and threatening to demand more money if people skip the last segment (i.e. only fly UA LAX-DEN-NYC-DEN or CX HAN-HKG-JFK-HKG).
Taking a chance in court and killing the golden goose would not be a good idea. Canceling a few low margin FF accounts is a great way to keep us flyers "in line". (Look how many times the BA story has been repeated vs the 1000's of people that drop the last segment of a ticket.)

I had something come up for the date of my return flight. Unfortunate for me. I'm wondering if any A class availability will return. I'd like to move from a flight with F1 to one with F6, it would probably be a positive thing for CX too!

Whilst the reports are limited, it is not without precedent for airlines to take action. As such there is a risk associated with skipping the last segment. As to the size of the risk, this is unclear based on the information publicly available. Only individuals can determine if this is a risk worth taking or not based on their individual circumstances and risk appetite.

The fare allowed a free stopover in HKG on the inbound.
Assuming CX allows adding a stopover in line with the rules, how does this work with married segments? I assume it's no longer a case of searching for North America-HKG-Vietnam but rather North America-HKG and HKG-Vietnam, in which case there is A/J availability. I don't understand how the married segments would work in such a case.
