Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Correct, under normal circumstances. I think we can all agree that these go out the window in this case even though then it's a good question of what other rules the airlines decides to "disable" which customers could come to invoke. Refund? Change after departure? Tough call.

Does CX's website offer rebooking options for those who booked directly with them?

i have the same experience rebooking on their website as someone else reported, at least on the random dates i've tried -- even though i'm booked in F, i'm dropped down to J (i assume because no first seats left), and it's $$$.

I will be on KA294 from HAN-HKG on 2/7, then CX830 to JFK on 2/8, happy to meet up if anyone is doing the same. Will book a Vietnam airlines ticket HKG-HAN with about a 3hr layover, and def going to get e-visa ahead of time so no issues. Booked F, I think one of only 3 times I have actually paid for intl F travel lol.

Quick question, and sorry if this has already been asked before somewhere in the previous 71 pages:

If I am able to change the last leg (HKG-HAN) to a later flight on the same day, thereby extending my layover in HKG from 3h to 12h, would CX staff at JFK likely allow me to short-check the bags to HKG?

What if I am travelling with my wife, and only one of us tried to change the onward flight HKG-HAN to a later time on the same date, again would CX's JFK staff allow the person with the longer layover to short-check their bag, and the one who is on the shorter connection to check bags all the way through to Vietnam? Is it possible to change the onward flight for only 1 pax if the original reservation is for 2 or 3 people? If yes, would I have to do that over the phone?

Maybe it's worth a thought of ditching the idea to travel with checked bags before trying to jump through hoops of a rebooking that would definitely be expensive if not impossible (or sweat it and see what CX does in the end).

I am curious about this issue.. Say CX issues a SGNIAD ticket.. all legs CX coded but only sgnhkg and hkgsgn are operated by CX.

Would it be more favourable for CX to change those ticketed like this on their own metal instead? revenue will be kept inhouse - although not much but it beats paying AA more than CX has received?

Did CX pull all D fares ex-DAD? Or are all flights just sold out? If I try to change my flights it will cost me 12k..

They pulled all A/C/D/I fares out of Vietnam if there is a TPAC segment on the same ticket. That way they can fully follow the fare rules without allowing cheap changes.

Has anyone booked an internal flight with Vietjet Air? I saw a $20.23 fare per person on their website direct. Went to book it and then it jumped up to $30(ish) due to some service fee.....went through to the seat selection area and now the total price is $49.06 per person??? ...
