Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

I don't think the problem is the vietnamese part.... rather dates and time.... cannot arrive on the same day in HKG leaving from JFK.... it's a fact.
Vietnamese authorities say it's illegal to turnaround in Vietnam (such as HKG-DAD-HKG... and however limited to the fact you need to clear custom // immig), not regarding turnaround in the US. As far as US Immig is fine, Vietnamese authorities are not involved.

Transit is neither allowed at JFK. That itinerary is asking for trouble unless one is not checking bags and has GE.

Agents only see what the computer system shows (change fee + reprice). All other explanations are their own.
But that is no surprise. The fare rules indicates repricing at an historical fare. But the error fare has been removed from the system, so they reprice at the next available A fare.

CX cannot unilaterally ignore the fare rules that allow for changes now that they've honored the tickets, but they can marry the segments/keep A unavailable. There is already an example upthread of someone changing a VN operated flight to a KA (or CX not sure which) operated flight for their parents for ~$100 each, so obviously it is possible.

I went to check seats on my flights as it’s me and my buddy so I wanted get seats together on the J sections and 1A and 2A on the F sections HKG-JFK wasn’t available so we took 2K and 2D. When I asked what seats are left she said there’s only one seat left on the HKG-JFK section, and the JFK-HKG is completely booked full in F! (We did get 1A and 2A on the JFK-HKG) I guess my ticket isn’t exactly a totally fair example of the loads though given its Chinese New Years Time. But I’m sure I’ll see some of you on there!
I mean, I thought this mistake fare probably took away half their inventory, but with these full cabins it makes me wonder just how much inventory was taken to NA? I guess it wasn’t enough to cancel the tickets? Makes me wonder if you’ll actually get the real full F Cathay experience, or they’ll water it down, and if they’ll run out of bubbly and cavier. I have to imagine the employees are gonna be so over worked as the service is usually so personal in F I don’t think there will be time for any of that. Just how much inventory did this take from their first class? Could this be a warning sign they’re phasing F out? It’s all kind of a strange situation. This is definitely the mileage run of the century.

Good point, just checked Expertflyer and the MCT for JFK International to International is 2 hours so there is a bit of room in the schedule, but not much! As it’s over the MCT then the CX site would probably allow it to be booked as a return (haven’t tried to book something like that on CX so not 100% sure).
Agreed. Checking tail numbers for CX845/846 it looks like this is a same plane turn so if the inbound is delayed then the passenger flying this might get lucky and have their outbound delayed too...however I wouldn’t risk it! Too much margin for error!
I suspect that the passenger flying this won’t have much of an appetite for Flagship First Dining at JFK given the onboard catering on CX

i am staying at Park Hyatt now.
Saigon traffic can be daunting. Crossing streets can be challenging, especially with the motorbikes coming from multiple directions.
There isn’t Uber in Vietnam, but install Grab. Within the city center, grab rides mostly under US$2.
For those coming from SGN airport, there is domestic and international terminal. Do take note as I made a mistake getting my Grab ride to my hotel. Arrivals can be chaotic so do take note. Cost is about 170k vnd.
i highly recommend getting a SIM card. I got a 7 days/7 GB data only for US $8.60
i will try to answer what I can. It’s super hot today so bring sunscreen!

I transited SGN last year on my final QR ticket. I needed a visa to get my boarding pass at LAX. Luckily I had a copy of my previous (used) visa.
Upon arrival there was a transit desk pre immigration and checked in with VN and flew SGN-SIN. Never went through immigration. There was a lot of discussion on transit in the thread for those fares.
