Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Great question as I’m looking to do the same. I did go to SGN last year via NRT (only 3hr layover) on JAL from the US. I wish I remembered more clearly but from what I recall it was at boarding in Narita that I was asked to present the evisa, they wouldn’t have let me on the flight to SGN without. I’m fairly sure I didn’t present the evisa at checkin in the US but honestly not 100% certain. So I don’t think I would need the evisa to get to HKG but given how cheap and easy the evisa is, I’m going to get an extra one just in case. Better safe than sorry...

I think the best advice is already out there... you are supposed to have the evisa for this booking... you will most likely be asked for it when you check-in in the USA... there is a chance you can get away without it and not board the HKG-Vietnam flight... but it is a fairly big risk... versus paying as little as $25 for the evisa . YMMV

My plan is to do a award booking to have an outbound flight so no visa is needed and then to cancel. Since I have status- no penalty for redeposit.

Quick question regarding the evisa. Can I apply to get two evisas or do I have to wait to leave Vietnam first before applying for the 2nd one?
We arrive on Friday to start our DAD-JFK sector and will return to the country on Tuesday (quick turn at JFK) to spend a week in Vietnam. While I acknowledge they are fairly good about approving evisa within a few days I am not sure if 4 days, with half of it being over the weekend, is long enough to obtain approval before returning to the country...
Or get evisa for the first trip and do VOA on the second?

Just checking, I am booked to return, with an overnight stop in Hong Kong. If next day, I dropped the last leg and booked a different flight with another airline back to Phuket, would there be any issues, and would it have an impact on the miles/tier points awarded.

If CX opens up inventory in these discounted fare buckets again should we be able to change dates only paying the change fee (and not the fare difference)?
Also, my fare rules show $50 change fee and $200 cancel / no-show / refund fee. Are these fees per ticket / passenger or per booking? If it matters my reservation is for 2 passengers.

Anyone still have these on hold? I initially held 2x rt, 1x one way. Ticketed 1x rt + one way, hold expires on the other rt in a few hours. I likely cannot travel on the dates of the held one, and can't decide whether to pull the trigger on it, feel like it's conditional on being able to change dates for a reasonable fee... Trying to decide if I should do it and eat the cancel fee if end up not being able to change dates.

For those who are canceling their bookings: would you mind trying to change and play around with them to let the rest of us know if we can change our itineraries?
Secondly why on earth did anybody book American to fly TAPC when they could’ve taken Cathay first class? What was the point of taking this fare?

I hate to see these Tickets being canceled by anyone. If anyone can change the name on their itineraries I would gladly take them and throw in something for the trouble.
