CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and theyll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if youre solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and Ill move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Can someone add this to the wiki?
4/6 19:55-22:45 KA294 HAN-HKG
4/7 09:15-13:15 CX830 HKG-JFK

I booked a random return flight in September, but there's a good chance I'll just drop it unless I can find similar space for my SO.

Also, since the direct turn without visa doesn't work, I'm thinking of booking VN593 HKG-HAN (14:30-15:35). It gives me a 4 hour turn at the airport, which should hopefully be enough buffer in case I run into any delays or visa issues. What are others doing for direct turns?

For the A fare I booked, the wording is exceedingly clear that this is the case (if routing isn't changed); however, I haven't tried and in practice it may be impossible on the long haul leg as it seems they have married Vietnam-HKG-US segments to keep A=0.

Official Site: Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in the United States

For me, they have been very quick in their responses. (We have multiple tickets throughout the year so opted for the 1-year multiple entry visa.) After submitting your application you will get an email confirmation. You are asked to send them a text message. A few hours later we got a text back with the cost; $400 for two annual visas including all costs. The last email says 3-day service including FedEx overnight delivery. So we are expecting our visas next week.
Going in the NA-HKG-Vietnam direction, should we still expect visa check in NA if connection in HKG is overnight (>12hrs)?

I suspect they won't issue the boarding pass for HKG-Vietnam unless you have the visa.

Thanks for that. My HKG-US-HKG flights are in A and the fare basis is AAARRVN8. I assume you are referring to point one of the below:

BEFORE DEPARTURE
----------------
RE-PRICE WITH BE LOW OPTIONS AND PROVIDE THE BEST
FARE TO PASSENGER -
1. IF SAME ROUTING AND BOOKING CLASS -
USE ANY CX/KA HISTORICAL FARE FOR R E-PRICE AND
NEW TICKET MAY BE EQUAL/HIGHER OR LOWER THAN
THE PREVIOUS TICKET OR
2. IF SAME ROUTING BUT DI FFERENT BOOKING CLASS -
USE ANY CX/KA HISTORICAL FARE FOR RE-PRICE AN D
NEW TICKET MUST BE EQUAL OR HIGHER THAN
PREVIOUS TICKET OR
3. USE ANY CURRENT CX /KA FARE FOR RE-PRICE AND NEW
TICKET MUST BE EQUAL OR HIGHER VALUE THAN THE
PREVIOUS TICKET.

The "provide the best fare to passenger" is what I assume you're basing your position on.

That said, point two is interesting. To my lay mind, this implies that if A isn't available but F is, then that would be fine. However, I don't think F fares were part of this sale.

I'll keep an eye out for A space opening up which I guess is very unlikely.

Was this extraordinary fare valid on AA metal TPAC? I didn't see anyone mention booking one of those, understandably!
Or have you just gone totally off topic?

Theres a few mentions upthread of people booking AA operated flights via LAX.

The FFD access now makes sense (as an arriving AA F passenger connecting to domestic F).

To answer the question of where to post my miles flying on Cathay Dragon: J class on the Cathay Dragon flight (I don't think they have A on that flight), and A on the longer segment on CX metal.

But for those looking to skip the final HKG-Vietnam segment, could we at least get the NA-HKG boarding pass without having the visa? Same-day connections are difficult I presume, but I wonder if those with overnight in HKG can get away with it.

If A isn't available and F is, then per my reading of the rule, they would reprice at the lowest available historical fare matching the available class (which would be the lowest F fare on the day of ticketing).

Thanks for posting this. The Vietnam Embassy in Australia wants AUD140 for a multi-entry visa so this will save some money. I assume there's no multi-entry option so it would be necessary to order two single entries which is still quite a bit cheaper.

Evisa is only one time. There is no multiple entry. However, they are pretty good at getting it done within a few days, as the websites states.

If you got the multi-entry yes, you wouldn't need another evisa. You would need to wait that first time to get your visa, however, which could easily be half an hour. And with the evisa there is no more waiting at the desk anyway, so you are not saving any time. You are wasting time. I did the multiple entry visa, and now think it is a waste of time (and about the same price, it is $25 per evisa, $50 for multiple entry 1 month visa with $10 stamp fee I paid for some agency online to create me a letter).
(if you are also worried about passport space you would save space with the evisa as well, because you don't get a whole page taken up by the visa)
Thanks for this additional information. Evisa it is!

For LAX it would seem AA Flagship First Lounge in Terminal 4 is the best, especially for the a la carte dining options they offer. Otherwise the Oneworld First lounge at TBIT is the best option.
For IAD it seems you have 1 choice only since AA doesn't have a lounge there. This is the BA lounge.
Im on different dates, however in the same month!

Lots of understandable speculation and interest here (which I share) re whether it will be possible to change travel dates for simply the $100 change fee. Right now it seems very unlikely, given that (as I understand it) the A fare (and equivalent business class fares) is mostly or completely unavailable for the routes for which this great deal was offered.

But for those seeking a glimmer of hope, here's a post (#143) from the other thread discussing this situation, over at the CX forum:

CX is indeed heavily restricting F inventory, though I'm not sure that's entirely intentional. When I was on the yield team in RM, there was a mechanism that automatically pushes the inventory upwards, or gates a certain fare class when there is usually high demand. I suspect that the strong restriction on A is a result of such mechanism kicking in, and availability should normalize in the next few weeks once the system picks up on the lack of demand

I don't know enough to know whether this expectation is in fact valid, but thought I'd share it here.

And here's the thread itself, which provides some useful information and interesting perspectives:

Why ask a random person to try changing its ticket if you can do it yourself on CX website (only if you booked through CX booking channels). Just go to "Manage Booking" and select "Change Booking". All you have to do is select your new dates and it will give you flight options. Once you hit continue, it will re-price and show you the total you have to pay to change the ticket. You don't have to finish the transaction, just hit go back to manage booking.

CX is quoting me USD199.98 for two people to change the HKG-HAN sector onto Cathay Dragon metal. Contemplating doing this but scared to risk my booking. Any advice?

Also from what I understand, I don't have to worry about my parents entering and exiting the country as they do not require visas anyway right? (the only benefit of being SEAsian and yes i've checked phew)
CX doesn't have control over VN's inventory so they can't Zero out the premium discounted fares. Your fare must have a $100 change fee per passenger and it is not re-pricing since there is availability on the same inventory from your original ticket
