CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

I'd think they would have to disclose that changes will not be allowed. Otherwise they would be making up new rules.

I hope you're right about this, though I feel so lucky to have bagged one of these to begin with. I'd imagine that fairly soon someone will post about whether or not they were able to make a change for just $100.
Likewise, I feel the risk of an equipment swap to a 359 is moderately high for my HKG-SFO in Nov and SFO-HKG in Dec which would result in an involuntary downgrade from F to J. Hoping to see some data points in the coming months about how CX handles these issues as they're bound to surface.

Oh tricky tricky, my flights are J A A J, so they could marry the segments so that A is always 0 when connecting from Vietnam to the US (and vice versa) to disallow changes without violating the fare rules. Alternatively, they may just never open A again on those flights that are sold out of A now, also disallowing changes unless you happen to find a day where A isn't 0.

I did find one day at least where the former is the case - 2/14/19 has A1 on 846 to JFK; however, if you search for DAD/HAN/SGN to JFK, A0 shows. Whether this is typical behavior by CX (I checked BKK-JFK and 846 is A1, so I am guessing they married the segments for Vietnam) or a way to limit changes is unknown to me.

Probably the best summary of the debate about what a “historical” fare might be in the context of a mistaken filing. Did the mistaken historical fare really exist? Can it be completely withdrawn? Would CX be required to apply the mistaken historical fare for changes after departure?

In the past, other airlines have made deals with ticket holders, one change allowed, no changes allowed, etc in exchange for honoring the ticket at all. We’ll have to see what CX intends here. I doubt they have made their mind up yet about all these details, but I drew on lessons learned in the past with other similar deals and booked exactly what we could fly.

personally, because CX has been so correct to take responsibility for its mistake, i’d perfectly accept should CX decide to make everything possible to limit the damage (like zeroing availability through marriage
segments or similar practices).
a lot of people - me included - always comments about airlines not honoring fares and not taking responsibility for their mistakes... so why should we complain about that? At the end CX is perfectly playing borderline but within the rules, exactly how we use to play borderline within the rules when we furiously buy these ‘special fares’. in this specific case CX, compared to us, is also facing and accepting a consistent financial loss.

This is correct according to the fare rules since you (presumably) have not yet departed. Once you have flown the outbound segment the fare rules allow the usage of lowest-ever fares for that routing (plus $100 fee), which would mean no change in fare if A bucket is available. However, it seems unlikely that CX can afford to permit this unrestricted as it would, for example, allow non-sale tickets booked at regular prices to also be repriced using the $499 DAD-JFK fares.

Didn't even consider that. That would not be great. Since CX usually runs two flights a night (even now) I am hopeful that this doesnt happen.

If its the same day, yes. I did it recently on separate tickets, arriving F on an award stop-over to Australia. I booked a side trip on revenue in Y HKG-TPE-HKG and spent a few hours in the city and then went to the F lounge.

Doesn't CX depart out of a different terminal than AA at JFK?

Please do NOT do this without doing your research first. A lot of these "orphanages" are elaborate scams. Children are 'borrowed' to show off to the tourists, then go home to their parents at night, while the 'orphanage' keeps all the donations. Even worse, parents are 'encouraged' to adopt out their kids because they will have a better life in the 'orphanage', or are even kidnapped.

The first part is incorrect - these fares allow changes for $100 with repricing at historical fares prior to departure of the first segment (assuming fare class is available).
