Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

What is not fair is that: if airlines screw up by posting error fares, they can rescind their offers in way more than 24 hours.

If consumers make a mistake by buying an overpriced ticket, they have no recourse, except a 24-hour cancellation only for US consumers.

This is a one-way street.

(1) is always a right if they refuse to honour. Even if CX doesn't initiate refunds, all purchasers can chargeback CX or TA for "Services Not Provided" or "Not As Described".

Highly doubtful CX will do (2) and (3). It either is a valid fare or it isn't.

Makes sense to me. (#3 could possibly be replaced with mileage credit)

What is not fair is that: if airlines screw up by posting error fares, they can rescind their offers in way more than 24 hours.

If consumers make a mistake by buying an overpriced ticket, they have no recourse, except a 24-hour cancellation only for US consumers.

This is a one-way street.
This airline has some form in dragging their feet - like, 7 months.

Wonder how many 399.88 reimbursement claims DOT will get.

It is a one way street and it is indeed unfair.

Try using orbitz next time, they're pretty good with cancellation policy. In fact, most travel agents can book any ticket and cancel within 24 hours - the more credible OTA just choose to pass on that right to you instead of charging you like those other shady OTAs.

Out of curiosity...was anyone able to book this with a stopover in HK going to the US? Fare rules seem to say its possible, but wasn't sure if anyone actually got it to ticket.

Another issue: I don't agree that everybody knew with 100% confidence that it's an error fare. Perhaps CX had some intention to lure US customers to flying them more often, given increasing competition in both the high and low end segments? Perhaps this deal was akin to Chase Sapphire's mega sign-in bonus--the intention was not to sell this particular credit product, but to use it as a door-opener to new high-end customers. In fact, my mind was more inclined to think that the second rationale was more likely. They desperately need new, affluent customers.

If they want to lure in new affluent customers they'd be doing a publicized ex-USA limited $2000-$3000 business class roundtrip fare with some sort of fast track to get Marco Polo status. Not ex-Vietnam. The fact that these business and first class fare are priced similar to economy fare shows that this is clearly a mistake fare, some guy in IT missed a few 0 or something.

CX is in deep financial trouble due to a huge mistake in fuel hedge, competition from low cost Chinese carrier backed by local government (this is why you see sub $400 rt economy with 15 hr layovers), and terrible in-house operation in general. CX had to lay off a lot of people last year as cost cutting measure.

I think you're grasping at straws here. If they wanted to lure US customers they'd do a fare sale out of the US. They might also advertise the sale fares too, you know, as part of a coordinated marketing effort. >99% of customers booking this (on New Year's Eve no less) most likely heard about it from a blog or forum post that clearly stated it was a mistake fare.

Yes they need new affluent customers, but on top of that they need customers willing to routinely shell out thousands for a ticket to Asia. That's not the kind of customer they just attracted.

I have a few tickets with a stopover in HKG so i can throw away the last segment HKG-HAN.

I don't understand this question. Since this promotion was for Vietnam - USA round trips, aren't ALL tickets supposed to have a stopover in Hong Kong?

If your premise was true, then CX miscalculated the number of bookings it will get in a matter of hours incentivized by the multiple bloggers trying to increase blog readership.

In my opinion, if an airline files a fare through ATPCO and people book into it, they should honor it. People do the same by buying restricted fares and when plans change we pay them cancellation or change fees associated to the fare. When I fly ULCC's and my carry-on weights more than what it is allowed in their policies, I get charged at the gate no questions asked or I get denied boarding. As it was said before, this is a one way street.
