Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

EQM's are earned based upon distance and class of service bonus, so 150%. RDM's are based upon distance, plus class of service bonus, plus "additional bonus" plus elite bonus. So, MVP level elite earns 400% of BIS for CX FC fares. Of course, MVP Gold 75K earn 475%.

She was less certain about the J tickets, which have done much, much less damage to the inventory. My view also is that the "doctrine of mistake" grounds for voiding the contract under HK law is much less clear cut for the J bookings - at least for those tickets that were priced at the non-DAD rate.

not too long ago (ex-MLE and ex-CMB), so not clearly a mistake in my mind. I have plenty of receipts in my inbox for our family of five flying business class for what we paid on this.
My big question for US based folks is where will that question be addressed: will the DOT entertain a dispute about mistake and if not what court would have jurisdiction? My guess is this exceeds the allowable amount for small claims, if they even have jurisdiction, especially if you booked for multiple pax.

I booked one flight in J on CX.com and then cancelled it a half hour later and booked the F flight on the same site. The cost of the J flight has posted to my AMEX account, while the F flight is still processing. I'm guessing CX will process the cancellation in the next week or so, but just throwing out a data point.

i had to cancel mine bc it was closing in on the 24 hour and saw this, i submitted a refund request hoping they would just refund the whole thing!

Be careful! i think for most of us in the US when we went to book these on cx wesbite, it routed to the vietnam english website. check your e-tickets. if the office address has a viet address then your ticket was issued in vietnam.

::EDIT:: Nevermind, the system makes it that you have to cancel first then submit a refund request. Let's hope they give us our refund back without charging the cancellation fee.

The price for one way was the same as the price for the roundtrip in the case of our itinerary (SGN - HKG - LAX - SEA)

It's not even 9 am yet in HK. I would expect after a conference with their lawyers regarding their options they'll announce something in about 6-8 hours.
Edit: Ah I see you were asking about someone flying today. Usually if you can fly before any decision is made you should be good. So anyone flying before this afternoon should be fair game!
