CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

So after having slightly too many i decided to book DAD-SFO. I know i'll have to wait a few weeks to see how things pan out.

As a UK citizen, any advice on how the hell to get to DAD either on the cheap or using Avios?

Fly to BKK then take ThaiVietjetAir to DAD, that's how i'm gonna do it.

As a UK citizen, any advice on how the hell to get to DAD either on the cheap or using Avios?
Avios ticket to one of the many nearby Asian hubs. HKG is my personal choice.

If CX cancels I am curious if AMEX will push CX to make things right for platinum/centurion cardholders who booked thru AMEX. I know with the AF fare last year AMEX got AF/DL to issue $1,000 vouchers for some customers, but I think they booked through PTS not Amextravel.com.

We will see what happens. Fingers crossed CX will take the high road and honor those fares. Airlines certainly make us pay when we mess up (with a mountain of fees), so IMHO its only fair to hope they will honor, but limit to one ticket per customer.
I jumped on a BA "promotional" fare using my Amex Platinum card, and Amex did nothing for me after BA cancelled the ticket....

Was SFO the only California destination available ?

I checked LAX but it was not pricing out for the dates searched.

LAX wasn't pricing at the lowest rates (but seemed lower than normal). Not aware of other CA endpoints with the sale.

Was it booked thru Amex or with BA?

That is the difference. I booked my AF ticket on Orbitz with my platinum card and didn’t get anything as Amex wasn’t my travel agent for that ticket.

i looked at Lax and Sfo and at least for the months I checked Lax was not on sale. I didn’t try other endpoints assuming that it had to be a CX gateway. That being said I did see Sgn-Ord with connections in HKG and either SFO or LAX

Figured as much glad I jumped on the SFO deal. Always easy to position to SFO from LAX

I actually made that reservation using Amex points. But the process was like Amex charged my Plat card first, then used the points to cover the cost. Amex still did nothing at the end.

So many of you are professionals.

How many miles will a non elite earn on AA or AS for DAD-HKG-JFK return booked in business (D)?

Thanks in advance

I was just chatting to my OH, who's an SP on Cathay, and she said that the word from Cathay City is that about half of the entire F inventory for flights in 2019 between HK and the US was sold last night. For this reason alone, she thinks the tickets won't be honoured as management will just see massive losses in potential revenue (and not the subtleties that others have nicely articulated above).

She was less certain about the J tickets, which have done much, much less damage to the inventory. My view also is that the "doctrine of mistake" grounds for voiding the contract under HK law is much less clear cut for the J bookings - at least for those tickets that were priced at the non-DAD rate.

Time will tell....

I just checked my booking and it has disappeared both searching by e-ticket number and PNR. Booked on CX.com DAD-JFK in F. Hope they are not just unilaterally cancelling bookings.

Is your ticket a straight F ticket or mixed J/F ticket? Mine is a mix and it's still there.

It’s a mix as the DAD-HKG flights are in J.
