Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Managed to book 1 HAN-IAD. HAN-HKG-LAX-IAD return. HKG-LAX-IAD are on AA metal (CX had zeroed everything out by the time I got to the game, and this was the only thing left). Booked on CX.com. CX flight numbers on all flights. However:
1. When I view my reservation on CX website, it says it is an award redemption. I tired to cancel (to see what would happen), and it said could not be done online, most likely due to being an award booking.
2. When I view it on AA.com, (attached my EXP #), all the flights are AA flight numbers. Shows as ticketed. AND, AA has the correct fare amount listed (even though I have a CX ticket number, 160)
My questions, how will AA credit this to my AA account? By revenue since they know they amount? Or, by distance for a much higher EQD? If they decide to honor and I would get the lower EQD I might not fly.

Based on 1. FT activity and 2. Some folks had a scrape program that advised them earlier (I was advised MANY hrs before on FT), I'd suggest 7-800 people booking at least 2 RT each. 1600 or so bookings in J and F. Personally I have one in each based on what was available. CX don't fly F everywhere.

I snagged SGN-HKG-SEA return, the idea of getting directly to and from my home airport on the new CX service there is incredibly appealing when you have three kids, so i passed up routings with F for simplicity.
We’ve been on many of these journeys before, most when the DOT rule was pro-consumer, so just have to wait and see. I was able to snag YVR-HKG biz awards for us to get over there. As an EXP i can book and cancel those without penalty.

Due to an inadvertent coding error for a brief time on July 12 and 13, your recent purchase of First Class travel between the Hong Kong and the U.S. was priced at the Economy Class fare. I canceled one ticket as I messed up the dates. Fortunately I was able to book a second one last night with the right dates.
If CX cancels I am curious if AMEX will push CX to make things right for platinum/centurion cardholders who booked thru AMEX. I know with the AF fare last year AMEX got AF/DL to issue $1,000 vouchers for some customers, but I think they booked through PTS not Amextravel.com.
We will see what happens. Fingers crossed CX will take the high road and honor those fares. Airlines certainly make us pay when we mess up (with a mountain of fees), so IMHO its only fair to hope they will honor, but limit to one ticket per customer.
