Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

completing a quick weekend trip on this fare, sat in ewr at the moment, cathay insists that we have that instant noodle well travelled life with brooklyn lager. subpar flights and poor service. oh well forgot hkg is now prc. thank them and greatful for the aa miles but the flights were just very ordinary.

I think that’s cause it’s putting you into J class ticket, where it seems only C or D class availbity allows for the change without repricing. Since I had expert flyer already open did a quick search and indeed no C or D inventory on these flights. What’s the class you’re currently booked into?
The “redemption” glitch is also still not resolved as of now.

completing a quick weekend trip on this fare, sat in ewr at the moment, cathay insists that we have that instant noodle well travelled life with brooklyn lager. subpar flights and poor service. oh well forgot hkg is now prc. thank them and greatful for the aa miles but the flights were just very ordinary.

I agree with those members who argue that if CX is honoring the fare - which we are all grateful that it is - then the airline needs to honor it in its entirety, which includes the fare rules. It can't pick and chose.

If you fly other airlines you will know. Wonder how hard is it to refill glasses, replace water bottles than chatting about maggie based in miami with ba. And the food was inedible pretty pretty much. Well we take what is given at this price, but really i didnt need to go to nyc and wouldnt have spend this cash if not for aa miles or status, unlike last years qr fare out of sgn,.

I agree, I’ve flown J with QR, SQ, QF, JL, MH, BA, AF, and KL in the past year, and I’d put CX (with the new catering) on par with SQ and JL, and QR even (given it is not a Qsuite flight - I’ve had too many bad food on QR J). The SQ seat isn’t nice IMO, and I actually prefer CX new-catering J over non-Qsuite QR, and slightly above SQ. Though I still sort of prefer JL over CX.

There are so many different version or different message in these 95 pages about whether the change of date is allowed or not if there is availability using original price and change fee. I think we should update the WIKI with information or its clear. If the date change is allowed or not and how to contact whether support on email or online.

I'm surprised to know the amount of members wishing to drop the last segment back to Vietnam.
As I suppose CX is following this thread, I'd suggest them to waive the change fee to remove the last leg HKG-Vietnam. For CX's benefit, they can put the J inventory back for sales / awards, instead of getting a bunch of no shows. I don't think they overbook J seats? For travelers' benefit, you can check your bags to HKG and credit miles without sweat.
It sounds like a win-win to me.

They need to keep up price differentiation for HK O/D vs transit, over everything else.

The best for you is not lose no matter whether you drop the last segment.
Why would Cathay offer anything for nothing gained?

My question is: would i be able to change the last segment, HKG-HAN, only? my return leg is booked together not having stopover in HKG, how am i able to change to stopover? i tried the website several times but it never let me choose the HKG-HAN segment alone, always forcing me to change the whole return leg...
Or in this case calling CX to change is the only option i have?

So my advice to you would be to call your OTA or CX and try to change it. But my airline knowledge tells me that if you wanna change the destination you’re going to have to pay through the nose and it will be priced at the current fare.
