Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

They are 100% incorrect but I was able to change one of my flights to a better day with a $0.16 refund to my card (CX website auto-pricing correctly). I am not having to dispute a transaction with my card issuer or having to call CX Reservations office and deal with a human that is quoting me a $12K change... have fund trying to change/cancel your tickets.

Nope, just saying good luck disputing the CX transactions with your credit card issuer and interpreting a rule that is not clear enough. The rule says to/from the US, but doesn't talk about using POS in a foreign country (ex-Vietnam in this case) which is what I stated. Hope you get your full refund and don't stress yourself too much! CX's website is giving you a 12K price change because you are trying to rebook on flights that don't have availability in the original class of service (fare bucket). The system is repricing using a higher fare (substantially higher since it is not a mistake fare). If you find flights that do have availability in the same class of service (from your original ticket) the website should only display a change fee (if your fare had change fees) or Zero (if it doesn't).
I've seen a lot of availability in C and D open up in the past two days on both DAD-HKG-JFK/EWR and JFK/EWR-HKG-DAD which makes me think that either people are cancelling tickets or CX is reopening the inventories (on married segments).

It is just amazing how everyone in the USA is all about courts and rights and even if they get a good fare to be honored, they still want there way, because they made multiple bookings without reading the fare rules and just think the 24 hour rule will protect them in Vietnam (yes, destination USA) or they will dispute the charge.
Living in the USA an coming from Europe makes it easy not to always think that small claims court is the solution to everything (or even a lawyer).

I really do not get it, lets fight CX for a couple hundred USD, as I deserve F and not that J ticket not refunded completely.
I think I actually learned about RM and pricing by what rojo wrote. I knew the system was already allowing me changes for $0.16 cents as long as inventory was available in expertflyer.
I will make sure I sip some champagne to your salud next week when I start my journey back to the USA on CX's J cabin. Let us know how your dispute goes?

Nope, just saying good luck disputing the CX transactions with your credit card issuer and interpreting a rule that is not clear enough. The rule says to/from the US, but doesn't talk about using POS in a foreign country (ex-Vietnam in this case) which is what I stated. Hope you get your full refund and don't stress yourself too much! Yes, you go an dispute your charges and yell at CX's CSRs. In the meantime, I am pretty sure "rojo" and if he is flying on my same flights (me), will be sipping up champagne to your "salud". - I am not disputing the charge. I will not dispute the charge. I never had any intention of disputing the charge.
- I am flying as ticketed, which included post-purchase, pre-departure flight changes at the stated $100 change fee.
- I do not live in the United States and I have advocated neither for legal recourse or a credit card chargeback.

So instead of taking the hit and knowing that even with partial refund of J ticket you got a super deal on F, it is worth it to fight it via FAA rule and spend all that time in small claims court or lawyering up? instead of just getting ready to fly F and sip some champagne?

Sorry if this question has been answered, but have not seen it in mentioned in the last week or so of posts.
If possible, I would like to change my flight to come home 1 day earlier. I am flying J on han-hkg and A on HKG-SFO. If I see J5/A2 on the flight 1 day earlier, does that mean I should be able to change without getting repriced to a much higher fare? I would call CX directly, but I booked through an OTA and at least online they are not showing any changes available.

I had a weird situation in the frenzy of my bookings where I had accidentally booked two A seats on the same flight. Out of curiosity, would I have been able to fly both tickets and get both flights credited? What if I had booked one ticket in A and one in C/D? Would I have been able to fly this (again, out of curiosity?)
I mean, if it worked, I would consider changing one return leg to coincide with my other return...if not, going off D availability on EF, I'll just position on my JFK-HKG-DAD in D to my HAN-HKG-YVR in A a few days later will ask to put mine in the wiki once I get this sorted through. I had to have a name change to one of my tickets, which caused it to be reissued and now it seems like I have to call in to make changes to my booking (I'm actually getting a "This booking was not made within the valid time period." message, but I think the problem could actually be perhaps due to the ticket now being "booked" through a reservations center rather than online?)

If you have two overlapping reservations under the same name, passport, FF #, etc., you risk having one or both canceled. Some airlines periodically sweep bookings, canceling things like that. So unfortunately not.
