CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Anyone flown it yet and dropped the last leg back from HKG-HAN or other Vietnam ports?
Any problems from CX staff, mileage credits or penalties?
Would appreciate feedback, thx.

anyone have luck repricing with historical fare on OTA? A/J inventory (ex-DAD, USA POS) is there but then i'm dealing with dumb call center agents... i would assume OTA is using USA POS also.

anyone have luck repricing with historical fare on OTA? A/J inventory (ex-DAD, USA POS) is there but then i'm dealing with dumb call center agents... i would assume OTA is using USA POS also.
CX changed something (my guess is just map AAARRVN8 to another fare), to prevent historical reprices on the CX website. I would assume the same applies to OTAs.
Married segment inventory is still available, but now all I see on the CX website is J class for 10-20k more.

what do you mean by mapping AAARRVN8 to another fare? second call with a rep - basically am told they're using the same fare basis but even with historical repricing the system spits out 20k

The Twitter Team was previously responsive and kept denying my requests, and now they're ignoring me altogether. Any advice on who to contact next? I've filed a DOT complaint but due to the government shutdown a response is unlikely.

Also if anyone has had any experience canceling an F ticket after 24 hours, but still get a full refund? I would think it's in Cathay's interests to cancel as many of these voluntary tickets as possible.
1) They are right
2) All regular ticket conditions apply including cancellation penalties
3) CX likely makes more on these tickets ($) than on award tickets so there isn't any major motivation here to let people cancel for free.

I don't understand how they're right in the case of tickets canceled within 24 hours. I went through the US site. They may have redirected me internally to their Vietnam site but it was without my knowledge. And how is a consumer supposed to know they're now on the Vietnam site? In any event, the DOT rules covering the matter don't specifically mention a consumer has to book on the US site, just that the carrier marketed flights to US customers - which it did in this case by selling it to me with a few clicks from the US site.

Other carriers, like Qantas, have a pop up warning you when you're being taken to a foreign site and that foreign rules will apply. Cathay doesn't.

When is space released? Looking for Oct 24-28 time frame jfk-dad but only goes til 10/21 and then dates in November without price skyrocketing. OTA is letting me do for $100/pax, that shouldn’t go away right?

#1 is completely wrong. Too many reports in this thread about full refunds to argue this point. Also, the purchase was started on the US site. If it was acceptable to reroute people to other international sites, all carriers would do this to circumvent the US rule. I previously posted the relevant link. (And rerouting the sale to lower tax countries would have additional tax benefits for US carriers.)

Dispute it with the cc company. I did with Amex. Still waiting for a reply but I am 100% confident the $ will be returned. My friend did it with Mastercard - got a permanent credit immediately.

Lufthansa does this for years already. They do display a notice about the re-routing though.

A charge back against airlines might be successful with the credit card company but can get you banned from the airline. CX likes to add people to their "security lists".

We went through this already on this thread and you had posts on this topic deleted because they were inaccurate and attacking strawmen. You're not correct on 1 and the regular ticket conditions for 2 make it quite clear that you cancel within 24 hours, because:
- the Cathay ticket rules say you can cancel within 24 hours if you purchase a ticket on the US site
- when you go to purchase a ticket on Cathay's US site, the breadcrumb trail at the top says "United States - English" throughout the search process
- once you start booking a ticket through that process which leaves from Vietnam, the breadcrumb trail disappears, so it's never made clear to the user that they're now booking tickets on the Vietnamese site. The charge is in USD, there's no warning that you're being moved to a different site. Other sites (notably Qantas) quite clearly do this.

Wrong. Wrong. And oh boy, wrong.

Just speculating on why we aren't able to get changes at historical price anymore. We know we should be able to, and we were able to during at least two points in time. Now we can't anymore, even if there is space, so CX must have changed how they treat the ticket.

What's weird is that it isn't totally wiped out right now. I can find a few dates that I can change to without repricing, but haven't yet figured out any pattern as to what those dates are since most dates with A/J availability are not available for a $100 change.
