CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and theyíll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if youíre solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and Iíll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Amen. I donít want to offend anyone from the UK, but BA has been horrible to me the last year or so. Their F is terrible. J is terrible. The customer service is terrible. Theyíve had to water down their products so much because of competition with EasyJet and Ryanair. Every interaction Iíve had with their customer service was terrible, and they donít listen or seem to care about you if youíre not a Gold. Youíre just another number. Itís only Iíd say recent that itís been so bad for me anyway, Iíd say the past 1-2 years in my experience. Itís a shame because they once were a great airline to fly. Again just my experience.

Iím totally lost on changing these tickets. How were some people able to do it on orbitz for $99, and for the same kind of ticket I have in F (A,J) but when I go to change they want 16k?

im confused what you need to do? Is it as simple as finding A and J for the appropriate legs on the flights you want on expertflyer, and then if there is enough A and J itís only $99?

Well all appropriate classes were available when i did my search but yet it wouldn't rebook me to them. Maybe I can play around with it a bit more later and see if something changes.

I donít get why it worked out fine for @fly2nrt. Especially considering we used the same method of booking and same fare classes. Meh, whatever... Iím just trying to understand the method to this madness, if there is any anyway.

I'd love to hear an airline explain how they suffer damages when a seat which has been paid for leaves empty (especially if they are made aware of it before take-off, so, for example, the flight is not delayed while waiting for the passenger)
I canít get my like button to work, but 110% +1 👍🏽.

It would be nice if people who already flew these segments could tell us what happened if they dropped the last segment without being too specific to jeopardize anything they say.

Just wanted to add my experience in case it helps anyone.

I didn't think the fare would be honored, so I booked a departure as soon as I could, and ended up booking HAN-HKG-JFK in J/F departing on 1/2.

I then had to get to HAN (I was in China at the time), and from what I could tell, US passport holders did NOT need a visa for an international-international transit at HAN. I managed to find a cheap ticket that departed within a few hours that would get me into HAN at 2am on ZH (from SZX). That would give me plenty of time to figure things out since my flight on KA didn't depart for 8 hours.

Interestingly enough, I was never once asked to show a Vietnam visa, neither at my original checkin with CA, nor when I checked in with ZH at SZX. Once I arrived in HAN, I found the transit/immigration area, and noticed that there were doors leading up to the departures area labeled "Transit", however they were both locked. There was a transit desk, but at 2am, it was empty. I inquired at the visa desk, and they told me to wait at the transit desk and they would call someone. I technically did not need the transit desk since I was able to checkin for my CX flights online and was able to print the boarding passes out before I left SZX. Mobile boarding passes were not allowed for HAN. So when I arrived in HAN,I already had my onward boarding passes in hand. After a few minutes, someone came over to look at my boarding passes, but tried to tell me that I needed to checkin and needed a visa. When I pointed to the words "Boarding pass" on my printed out boarding pass, they still said I would need a visa until I mentioned that I did not have any checked bags. They then asked me to wait a few minutes while they radioed someone, and after a few minutes someone came down through the "Transit" door and let me go through which brought me up to the security check just beyond the immigration counters. After that it was a simple check and then I was in the terminal for the rest of the night until my flight.

A tip if you are stuck overnight in HAN like I was, at the far left end of the terminal are a few chairs that are for napping and it is relatively quiet there. Most benches in the airport also do not have arm rests, so it is easy to lie down on the benches to get some rest as well. Thankfully, most of the tvs in the terminal were also on silent (except one showing a sporting match near the security checkpoint). Once it became 6 (or maybe 7) some of the lounges started to open, and CX J allows you to use either the VN lounge, or a specific 3rd party lounge (I can't remember which one).

I had no problems boarding either of my flights for HKG or JFK and ended up enjoying them.

In case anyone is curious, both flights credited to my AA account within a few days and I earned the following (as ExecPlat):

HAN-HKG (J)
EQM: 785
EQD: 131
RDM: 1,282

HKG-JFK (A)
EQM: 12,105
EQD: 2,421
RDM: 21,789

You mentioned nobody asked for a visa. I assume this was going from China to Vietnam? Did CX ask for a visa at anytime? Or on the return to Vietnam?

Sent CX a message on Twitter on why I can't select any BA/AA flights on the 'Change my booking' menu, they told me you can only change it to KA/CX flights..

I have a workaround for that. If you go edit passenger details in the CX PNR and attach an AA FQTV, wait a few minutes then log into the Aadvantage account. You will now see the AA segments in your AA Profile complete with the (different) PNR for AA. You can change seats there, go log back in via CX and out back whichever FQTV you want.

I don't mean selecting seats, I mean selecting new flights.

Did they say why? Iím afraid theyíre gonna start treating these tickets like mileage tickets.

They said that this ticket is only eligible for CX/KA flights and that's why their system can not process flights with BA/AA segments.
