CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

A first year law student can tell you that throw-away ticketing is not illegal. You cannot be arrested and charged for it.

If anything, it would be treated as a breach of contract. Nothing to do with 'illegality'.
So, then, what's the issue? Breach of contract is all about damages (eg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breach_of_contract)

I'd love to hear an airline explain how they suffer damages when a seat which has been paid for leaves empty (especially if they are made aware of it before take-off, so, for example, the flight is not delayed while waiting for the passenger)

HAN-HKG and HKG-HAN booked in J
HKG-YVR and YVR-HKG are booked in first

I searched the availability by segment on Expertflyer and found the dates that had space in J and A , but Expedia tried to reprice it much higher.

And that is the interesting area. Rarely, if ever tested because airlines don't want to open up that side of their contracts to scruitiny.

But they can take other action aside from breach of contract (which they do anyway occasionally like with BA). They can. for example, close FF accounts or not credit miles.

Got no skin in this game, but are you sure that you looked at a Vietnam PoS for availability? IIRC expertflyer doesn’t have Vietnam as an option.

You should search VN-HKG and look for availability that way. CX was applying married segment logic that reduced A/C/D/I inventory when HKG-VN was included.

Does anyone have the same problem?

Thank you
403 forbidden in their booking portal happens when you use a data-center IP address / VPN provider that is in their blacklist. Can you try from a different IP address or VPN ?

Well.
I booked this from home. I tried to access this from home, work, and VPN to US. All the same. I guess I need to call them.
Thanks

Not intending to change anything but I booked on Orbitz and tried just for fun.

It does offer me change options but despite EF showing J/A class on the same flight available it tries to downgrade to Business (I) and displays a $2,039 fare difference plus $100 change fee.

On the second attempt it then popped up an error message.

As earlier, you need married segment availability (if it’s a transit in HKG), AND availability with a Vietnam Point of Sale. Don’t think that EF can check for VN PoS.

Based on the dummy searches I've done so far, married segment is enough.

I am going to skip the last segment either way, likely, but don't want to force cancellation and risk potential mileage earning of the last flight flow (JFK-HKG), for example, by cancelling itinerary, since I am crediting to AA.
No, your JFK-HKG flight will credit but not your last leg to Vietnam. You can do all of it on their website, just make sure you have no checked bags or you will get an error message. Either way, if you get an error message, you can just call CX to get them cancelled without questions asked. (i had 2 times with error message because I booked from OTA, then they cancelled over the phone without questions asked, just tell them you are not able to fly because you need to stay in HK for whatever reason). Normally, you can do all (both cancel checkin and cancel last leg on CX site or app). Hope this helps -Dominicus

we were talking about mistake fares... and my sentence was about that.
BA is for sure not the best example.... neither the worst...

BA just sucks in general. I think that's fair to say.
