Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Has anyone booked an internal flight with Vietjet Air? I saw a $20.23 fare per person on their website direct. Went to book it and then it jumped up to $30(ish) due to some service fee.....went through to the seat selection area and now the total price is $49.06 per person??? ...

Do you really need bags? Especially when traveling C/F I never had an airline (especially CX) bother me about the size of my rather large carry on.
Maybe it's worth a thought of ditching the idea to travel with checked bags before trying to jump through hoops of a rebooking that would definitely be expensive if not impossible (or sweat it and see what CX does in the end).

I will be in HKG on a separate trip just before taking the flight from HAN - HKG - SFO flight. I need a positioning flight from HKG to HAN. There's a Vietnam Airlines (VN 593) flight departing HKG at 14:30 and arriving HAN at 1535. I have a few questions:

I will be in HKG on a separate trip just before taking the flight from HAN - HKG - SFO flight. I need a positioning flight from HKG to HAN. There's a Vietnam Airlines (VN 593) flight departing HKG at 14:30 and arriving HAN at 1535. I have a few questions:

Just a quick ask to see if I am missing anything. Credit SFO-HKG leg to AS at 450% MVPG right as that is by far the greatest value in most cases. And the KA routes HKG-HAN credit to AA or Cathay or JAL or whatever, right? Thank you.

If you have a lot of luggage and traveling with others including a baby, just get there the night before and avoid the headache.
Do not try #3 . You would be considered as a no-show on the first segment, and all downstream segment would be cancelled automatically. You and your party will be denied boarding at HKG on the TPAC segment.

I am assuming if travelling without checked bags and skipping the last leg for Hkg-dad, provided you have a valid visa to show at check in at JFK, then it’s ok. I assume the chances of CX retrospectively pricing the ticket are very low...

I don’t see how they can reprice if you skip the last segment. I’ve done it tons of times on AA, HU, and EK mileage runs. Nobody can force you to get on a plane and people can come of with a million excuses why they couldn’t take the last segment. CX cannot “reprice” the ticket if you can’t take the last leg because you get sick and have a doctors note

I used this ticket on Presidents’ Day weekend. I was surprised to see my SGN-HKG-SGN segments completely empty except me and my friend. We are the only ones in the cabin. But our hkg-Jfk-hkg are full. Did people just not go to Saigon on this deal? Sure it was the most expensive F ticket, but I wanted full AS miles which is why I chose Saigon. Just surprised to see the seatmap.

What I mean is an opportunity for us to meet each other on board and maybe share a glass of champagne together. It would be nothing that would be overbearing to the flight attendants. Or add undo stress to their jobs. I don’t know if people are interested in onboard meetings and share a glass of bubbly but it’s just a suggestion.
