Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Attempted ticket change: F->J downgrade?
When I go to "change flights" on one of my itineraries online, I'm presented only with options SGN-HKG-JFK where both legs are in J rather than F (original booking is in First). But when I try to "confirm" to see fare details, it still tries to charge me a $16k+ USD cost for the fare difference. Is that happening for others too or just me? I assumed it would try to reprice to the F fare which is rightly $16k and keep me in first. But to pay that much and end up flying in business of course is just a little bit unreasonable...
On a related note, has anyone who bought a busines fare tried schedule change? I'm not sure what fare class the HKG <-> US legs booked into on those. In the case of the first class fares of course A inventory looks zeroed out, but wondering if any more flexibility with the business class fares (particularly if they booked into J as I see a lot of J inventory throughout the year).
FWIW my fare codes are J/A/A/J. I've seen others I think mostly with the Vietnam <-> HKG legs booked in C or D, not sure if there is much difference between C/J on that segment.

I'm going to SIN in few days. I cancelled my return and booked SQ SIN-HAN J for SQ 20K (including 11K expiring in Jan). Timing could'd be better. The remaining flights are in August.

Called HK and Thailand CX offices to change one of my CX-marketed but AA-operated LAX-HKG flights to a CX flight (which still had A-class available), all dates and other flights remaining the same and got three responses. I am sharing since I am guessing these data points my help some of you too:
1) TH phone - 'Happy New Year' with a giggle and information that this very very special fare does not allow changes [contrary to ticketing rules] whatsoever. Super friendly.
2) HK phone - no seats available even in F class (contrary to both Expert flyer AND Cathay's own website telling me otherwise) and should they be available it would be 100 USD plus ~16,000 USD fare difference despite it staying in A-class. Yikes,
3) HK Facebook team - Same story about no availability but then I asked them if they were certain and mentioned their website availability and they said 'the seat slot for rebooking is different from for newly purchasing ticket. You are free to check with the hotline staff for verification in this case' - never heard this to be the case but I'm also no expert here.

Has anyone seen zero seats available when trying to select seats?
This is the case for one of my trans-pacific legs - all 6 first class seats are unavailable, grayed out with a slash. I don't know if it's normal or I should be worried.

No need to be worried. There are only two of three seats normally showing for non-status passengers (usually 1D and 2D, sometimes 1A or 1K as well). All the seat map means is that those seats available for pre-selection have all gone. CX doesn't usually overbook it's F cabin - so there will be a seat for you. You could also call CX (HKG is a good bet) and ask them to reserve a specific seat from one of the ones blocked.

I just tried to change my booking to see if I can change my HKG-HAN flight as I'm booked on VN since there is a mild panic that my parents won't be able to access the first class lounge because they have an 8 hour layover. CX is quoting me USD199.98 for two people to change the HKG-HAN sector onto Cathay Dragon metal. Contemplating doing this but scared to risk my booking. Any advice?
Also from what I understand, I don't have to worry about my parents entering and exiting the country as they do not require visas anyway right? (the only benefit of being SEAsian and yes i've checked phew)

That's what they did last time when I flew in PE as a OWS passenger, they printed two business class lounge invitations, one for LAX and one for HKG. They did that for my SIN - HKG (in J) and HKG - SIN (in PE, on separate booking) - they gave me two J lounge invitations in SIN (for SIN and HKG CX J lounges) and checked me in for both flights, and through-checked my bags all the way to MLE.

Why can't they access the F lounge in HKG? When they check in for their US - HKG - HAN/DAD/SGN flight, I think the check-in agent will print out two F lounge invitations, one for the origin airport and one for connecting airport (HKG) right?

it’s because the connection is on VN, which isn’t a OW airline. Whether CX has some sort of a lounge agreement with VN codeshare J passengers as suggested upthread, I don’t know, but generally accessing the Cathay Lounges in HKG requires a OW departing BP (Air NZ is an exception)
Edit: I think the OW "marketed and operated flight" applies only when you want to access a lounge that is operated by a different OW airline than the marketing/operating carrier. E.g. If lounge is operated by CX, and your ticket is sold by a different OW than CX, and your flight is operated by a non-OW airline, then you won't have lounge access.
In my understanding, as long as the lfight is marketed by CX (or KA), you will have access to CX lounges, regardless of who operates the flight. Now, if you want to get into the QF lounge in HKG, then they won't allow entry with a CX-marketed flight that is operated by VN.

This person who posted that you have to take the last leg to Vietnam is hogwash. Give me a break. Nobody can force you to get on a plane. I’ve had several mileage runs on AA, HU, EK, and dropped the last segment many times and nothing ever happened to me. You cannot be forced to take a flight bottom line.
This keeps being asked about the lounges. For those of you that have a Vietnam Airlines codeshare, I believe that Cathay has a lounge agreement only with Vietnam Airlines in HKG, and you are allowed entry into the Cathay lounges. I’m 90% sure they have a special agreement with them so don’t worry.
Don’t be worried. Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

1. For non-status passengers, are you saying that booking online you have a limited selection of seats, but if you call CX you can get any seat that's available?
2. And if status does matter for getting seats online or over the phone, does OneWorld Sapphire get you a choice of anything available?
