CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and theyíll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if youíre solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and Iíll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Date Changes

Thank you to all who have weighed in on date changes. Very interested in learning more about what options are.
How do I get the info to share to determine what are options for changes? I think I have
SFO HK in C Class
HK to HAN in C Class

Interestingly my outbound is in J Class.

Don't know if CX website uses ITA's ReShop solution for itinerary changes which does the fare calculation when trying to re-issue but each booking has a TST stored which has all fare information for each individual booking. When you re-price a booking a new TST is created and store in the PNR.

Do CX codeshares on VN metal get access to CX lounges at HKG?

The issue here is that if you are an F passenger on Cathay (regardless of OW status), CX website doesn't mention the guest must travel on a OW flight.
It's strange and I would also expect the guest would have to be on a OW flight, but it's not mentioned on their site, so maybe indeed there's no such requirement.

Since you fly J or F to/from North America already on your CX connecting flight, you are entitled to lounge access.

Indeed, itís not something I have come across before as all other OneWorld airlines who offer F seem to require guests to also be travelling on a OneWorld marketed and operated flight regardless of whether the person guesting them into the lounge is doing so by virtue of elite status or class of service.

The website also explicitly states your guest needs to be traveling on a OW airline to be allowed access with you as a status holder. For F fares, it just says + 1 Guest. Based on this I would assume CX allows for F passengers to guest another passenger in their lounges regardless which airline they are flying.

Correct, only for lounge access based on status (rather than class of travel) there is this requirement stipulated. So considering that s0ssos reports having been successful guesting in somebody who was not on a OW flight, we can assume this to be correct.

Based on the yearly seat capacity between Vietnam and Hong Kong for the year and the cabin class breakdown for the tickets that can be issued, my analysis estimates that around 5,000 to 6,000 tickets were sold during the period for which this would represent around 3% of the impacted capacity.

I would attribute that redemption seats will be somewhat limited especially for specific FFP programmes such as Alaska Airlines where it will be difficult to obtain zero seats for the entire 2019.

Just checking, I am booked to return, with an overnight stop in Hong Kong. If next day, I dropped the last leg and booked a different flight with another airline back to Phuket, would there be any issues, and would it have an impact on the miles/tier points awarded.

Many Thanks!

Once we have facts with links, we can add to the wiki.

Transit Vietnam on one ticket - No Visa Needed
Transit Vietnam on two tickets - No Visa Needed
Overnight Vietnam / Longer stay / Leave the airport secure area - E-Visa needed. Apply ahead of time, pick up visa on arrival. (Can also do a 'normal visa' with 1-3 single or multiple visits.)

I am basing my information on these two sites:
https://www.vietnamonline.com/visa/transit-visa.html
https://vietnamvisa.govt.vn/united-states-citizens/

Feel free to update/correct.

Also note: There seem to be many sites that will massively overcharge you for visas. Be careful!

If you are a US citizen then get an evisa (presuming just one visit). Do not go through any agency. It is faster and easier to get 2 evisas than 1 regular multiple entry.
https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/trang-chu-ttdt
Do not use any other website.
You will have to print out the evisa. Payment with credit card may also be an issue. Chase works better than Citi from my experience.
I'll defer to what sounds like your superior knowledge, but still wanted to ask about the bolded statement. When my wife and Iwent to Vietnam almost three years ago, getting the evisa online was fine, but processing it upon arrival at SGN was a real PITA. We sat in the waiting area for at least 30 minutes upon arrival while the rather rude staff processed the paperwork. IIRC correctly, friends with whom we rendezvoused in town with got a regular visa and breezed through immigration.

Would we have to wait at a separate counter if we got the multi-entry rather than the evisa? If not, and if we could simply present our passports and visas at the immigration counter, I'm very tempted to go for that instead, especially since we'd be entering Vietnam twice.

The OW rules say you must be departing on a OW operated flight for access, and my question is arriving from NA connecting to a non-OW flight so it wouldn't be allowed under OW rules but I'm not sure about CX's own rules.

No, if you're connecting you can get lounge access based on the intercontinental flight you've arrived from. And you're connecting to a OW-marketed flight so this is perfectly fine.

the evisa is an actual print-it-out-at-home visa now -- no more waiting at the counter 👍

Based on my past experiences with Cathay in Hong Kong, one is not granted lounge access unless connecting onto a OneWorld flight.
