Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Would anyone have input on the time needed / complexity of transferring at Hanoi airport to a Cathay flight? For example, coming in from Bangkok and trying to catch a 7.50 pm flight on Cathay on to Hong Kong, what time is safe for an arrival time into Hanoi? 2 hours? 4 hours? more?

Does one need to exit security and pick up their bags and recheck, or can one check bags all the way through?

Are you sure about this? If true, it’s definitely worth showing up early to the airport for. I have a JFK ticket, so I’ll be utilizing the F AA lounge if I can. Are you certain CX has this deal with AA? I thought the lounge within the lounge (AA First Flagship) was reserved for AA F? The food is very good and great liquor.

I wish they had limited it to 1-2 tickets per passenger which would have been a more than satisfactory outcome. The commercial departments (sales, marketing, revenue management) must be really dejected now-- how are they going to hit their 2019 targets when so much prime inventory, especially during peak periods, is wiped out by one IT error? CX is not doing too well financially, and like other posters have mentioned, jobs are on the line too.

With such an attitude it might be proper to ask why you "position" yourself half way around the world just to fly a simple First Class fare that wasn't all THAT cheap to begin with (a great deal but no RGN with a price point of $230 for one F RT)!?
Not an attack on you personally but I read a lot about this positioning issue here and even previously when QR had an EF from HAN/SGN as well. Is it worth it unless you are doing 3-4 of them back to back?

Wow...truly the mistake fare of the century. Kudos to those who have the time to fly this route multiple times. I’ll be doing it once...with 11 hours in the pier each way. I think the Han-yvr route is ideal for the daytime ground experience, though I’m a little jealous of those who get to try JFK flagship dining. Not worried at all about positioning to Asia, after 2 jal F and 3 Ana F redemptions easily this past year.

I booked via Expedia on my phone at a family members house. I was booking on another site and it kept giving an error. So I moved to Expedia. I booked and was happy.
Somehow (my mistake) I have Y on DAD-JFK, and J on JFK-HKG, when I knew I searched on F and could have sworn I selected F. I recall the pricing being $994 vs. the $600 for J.
By time I realized this, the deal was dead and I could not change. I wasn't sure if CX would cancel, so I left the booking in place but not its being honored.
I cannot imagine that flight in Y. I am trying to figure out how to change or get any. Any suggestions? Or is cancel my only option unless I want to suck it up?

Are you sure about this? If true, it’s definitely worth showing up early to the airport for. I have a JFK ticket, so I’ll be utilizing the F AA lounge if I can. Are you certain CX has this deal with AA? I thought the lounge within the lounge (AA First Flagship) was reserved for AA F? The food is very good and great liquor.

The BKK - HAN fifth freedom route was replaced with direct DOH - HAN service. On the bright side, Qatar has also launched DOH - DAD direct service, so there's plenty of options to get to Vietnam with Qatar if availability on CX is nerfed
