Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

As i was heading to the Wing from my connecting flight around gate 24 it was blocked off on either side of the moving walkways. And both moving walkways were moving in the outward direction. People were coming from there, but no way to get back. So literally no way to get there. I am assuming no flights are departing from the gates lower than 20.

I pulled the pin and flew my flight from JFK in business class. Who knows if or when first class will come back.

Curious to see this thread still active after 3 years, how do people still have active flight coupon for this fare?
Given it was Dec 31, 2018 and most ticketing would have settled 1-2 week after, I would imagine that all flights would have been flown by end of January 2020 before the whole covid shutdown, did CX basically kept the ticket validity open ended and allow changes far out into future?

Given it was Dec 31, 2018 and most ticketing would have settled 1-2 week after, I would imagine that all flights would have been flown by end of January 2020 before the whole covid shutdown, did CX basically kept the ticket validity open ended and allow changes far out into future?

Lots of us had tickets that still had returns left when COVID hit. So they kept getting pushed. And if you had a first ticket, CX kept pushing first back. (Now it is off the schedule I believe.)
I still have 1 return left - later this year. Sadly, I wont be the last one to fly!

I was supposed to fly out on Oct 30 in F, and I got the downgrade email last week. Anyone else in the same boat? I called in to see if I could reschedule, as I've done about 6 times during the pandemic, but this time the agent said that they could not find anything even into next year. The schedule online would also confirm that they are not selling F on the JFK-HKG route, through the end of schedule.
I am fully aware of how silly this ticket situation has become. My main goal is to fly out in F, regardless of date. My secondary goal, if I have to be downgraded to J is to re-schedule to next summer when my schedule is more free. If anyone else is in this situation I would appreciate any insight. Thank you.

I was to fly out on Nov. 1 and got the cancellation notice. As per usual, a couple days later, the lady I've been working with for some time (Vietnam office) emails me that I'm on the waitlist for next March.
"As per my email that was sent to you on 07APR to inform that I kept the flight on 01NOV on the waiting list. However, the system just now down grade to business class (still waiting list not yet confirm) because we are not yet re operate first class. Hence, I kept the waiting list for you on first class on 09MAR23. The flight details as below"

I use [email protected], but my email address must cause it to get directed to a specific agent because the same lady has been rescheduling me for the past ~5 times (Ms. Thien Ton). She's happy to put me on CX841 whenever it's scheduled because it's a 777 with an F cabin. They just haven't been opening the cabin for sale. What route are you search that you can't find a 777?
