Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Has anyone been able to rebook to Vietnam? ITA is showing availability for JFK-HKG-HAN with HKG-HAN on VN in late-February, but those flights don't come up on the CX site, and Cathay Twitter/phone said there was no way to rebook.

Recently called since my new departure date was coming up, and they turned mine into a "Cathay credit" which they said meant the ticket stayed open with an expiry of June 2021. Sounds like they're sticking to the policy of allowing rebooking onto the next scheduled flight whenever flights return.

I doubt they'll say "we're not going to honor this ticket because you called too late," but who knows.

Is Cathay Credit the same thing as the a certificate/voucher equivalent to the residual value of the ticket? I.e. once there is clarity on when you'd like to rebook, would they still rebook you into F at no charge, or is it going to be the current fare minus value of the Cathay credit?
No way to look at the eticket directly to confirm, but given that the "Cathay credit" is associated with my confirmation number and presumably the eticket number, I'm guessing I'll be able to keep the original fare/F.

Yeah the terminology is pretty confusing -- normally that means that you have some certificate with money associated. But the agent said that I'd be able to keep my original fare and rebook into the original cabins whenever flights return.
No way to look at the eticket directly to confirm, but given that the "Cathay credit" is associated with my confirmation number and presumably the eticket number, I'm guessing I'll be able to keep the original fare/F.

It is surprising that CX has not put in any codeshares with VN to Vietnam through EOS. Maybe it is just paperwork; Cathay Dragon flew to Vietnam, so maybe it is just refiling the name.

Yeah. I've been very frustrated with Twitter by this - even when I show them the screenshot of CX's policy to rebook to the next available date that they sent to me the last time I rebooked this, they've kicked the can down the road and said that only phone support can help. The Cathay credit idea is interesting, although I have to admit that I'm very skeptical I won't run into major issues with CX trying to use the dollar value as a credit towards purchasing a new ticket.

I'm also stuck on a limbo with my SFO-HKG-HAN booking which was cancelled. The first agent I spoke to and Twitter were of no help and only offered refund. I called the HK number and they advised calling back to rebook once they reinstate the HAN flight.

I doubt Vietnam will open anytime soon to tourists, especially from the US, but will hold out as long as I can and hope for the stars to align.

Called in to the global contact center via the US call center. The agent said she cancelled the segments for tomorrow and kept the ticket open, and to call back in January to see if HAN are loaded back into the schedule. She said you shouldn't need to pay any fare difference if A is available, but I expect that there'll probably be some issues when we do try to rebook. Also confirmed that the ticket validity will be extended when rebooking. A search of my PNR still shows all the intact (cancelled) segments.

Even on United, if your first segment hasn't been flown, you can call the unflown eticket a "voucher" so long as no-shows aren't penalized, since any changes to an unflown ticket reprice at current rates. Given that the "cathay credit" is associated with a PNR and my eticket hasn't been changed at all, I suspect this is what cathay refers to as a "cathay credit." Obviously, the description doesn't make as much sense if you've flown a few segments, and in that world, the unflown eticket operates less like a voucher, since changes price at historical rates. (But for this fare, obviously, date changes price at historical rates as well regardless of whether the first segment is flown.) On other carriers like United, when the ticket is refunded to an actual voucher, you get a separate code for the voucher and it is not associated with your previous PNR/eticket.
Totally agree the description on the website is suspect, and I'm not 100% confident here, but from what I can tell things seem OK.
