Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Just a sample for those who are HK Residents, I had flown on this recently.
I was able to get CX to INVOL the ticket from North America - HKG - Vietnam to just
North America - HKG after CX cancelled the HKG - Vietnam segment.
So the agent can do it with a Non-Expired Ticket, I had not hit the 12 months validity from 1st flown segment.
2 Huge Caveats to Remember!!!
1. Once your ticket is rebooked into North America - HKG, your travel date is rather stuck without causing a huge reprice if you want to do a voluntary date change
Now you could change it back to North America - HKG - Vietnam again but I doubt that will work for those who are gone past 12 months already
2. Your reservation might get "accidentally deleted" 1 week prior to flight since the system still thinks you don't have a HKG - Vietnam segment.
But calling back within 24 hrs should be able get the reservation restored and flyable.
This is likely non-applicable to close to everyone around, but just a record on file for those in need

I have a flight booked for the end of november which now when i try to pull up on cathay's website, it says unknown error occurred, try again later. I have other reservations with Cathay that are pulling up fine. Anyone else able to pull up their reservation from this deal?

I received the same cancellation / changes emails yesterday (that I have many times over) for flights now scheduled at the end of Sep. My itinerary is YVR-HKG-HAN and they said they cancelled the HKG-HAN leg. I received the same cancellation / changes emails yesterday (that I have many times over) for flights now scheduled at the end of Sep. My itinerary is YVR-HKG-HAN and they said they cancelled the HKG-HAN leg. Most folks on here at least got to fly half of it or the entire thing in a roundabout way.
Even if it ends up to be F for $700-750 one way, still works out well for most members here

NWplatinum, I don't think you should completely say that, regardless of how much of a scheduling headache this has turned out to be.
Most folks on here at least got to fly half of it or the entire thing in a roundabout way.

That's what I meant about 750.
I will agree it's 1.8 yrs and this thread is still live is an amazing anomoly of itself
.As for headache, imagine if this was a BA/AF/LH/LX as the issuing carrier, cringe
I would even say BLQ-HKG is (which I also bought) more of a scheduling quagmire than this CX ticket.

Data point: My Sep 30 YVR to HAN cancellation just spent 2 minutes and re-booked on Twitter DM for Nov 3. Assume it's the next in the long chain of pushed out dates ....

last time I spoke to CX they said they won’t extend validity of the ticket beyond IATA rule of 1 year from first sector. Which is mid-November for me. Also refused to put me on VN operated CX codeshare or to change destination from HAN to SGN.

I would suggest anyone looking to extend due to canceled flights to call the HKG office. The current policy does allow for going beyond one year. (I would not expect to be put on any partner flights as there is a cost associated with that, whereas flying CX metal - with traffic down ~90% - is close to free.) I have found some agents to be quite accomodating to pushing flights. (Some less so.) It seems the general policy is to put you on the next available flight (typically the following month), but some have been good at pushing that a few days (or more).
My 2 cents - be nice, be calm, be specific, cite the policy, and, as always, when necessary, HUCA. Do not try and force it with any one agent. You do not want the dreaded notes in the ticket comment area. This is a global Pandemic and is new to everyone. Policies change rapidly. (Qatar just changed their unlimited changes another year to the end of 2021!) We have all seen CX adjust their policies several times as the pandemic wears on.
