CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and theyll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if youre solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and Ill move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Agree, a lot of Asia is still closed for now.
What was your itinerary? Yesterday I was told 30 Sep was first available for YVR-HKG-HAN.

so I asked how much my refund will be
waiting more then 2 months for an answer
bothering them once in 2 weeks.
today I got mail and my refund is 147.5$ if I want .i would expect it to be at least half of what I paid (almost 1k + 100$ for change date )
do I have anything I can do ? Has anyone got a bigger refund ?
I'd just keep rebooking to first available and see how long this will go on...

Global321 october 10. O was proud to have convinced the agent to extend validity of the ticket. They wouldnt push after that date and. Le they cancelled. I think Ill call in early October (a day or two before my intended departure) and see when are the next flights.

We had to do the same. We were able to push validity to September (first few days available). I would be shocked if things open up in Sept or Oct. so I expect another email and another push.

We are on a FC ticket. The agent warned us that First might be zeroed out for the rest of the year. If that happens, we will certainly (try) to push until January, our preference now, given where COVID is at.

CX really dropped the ball on this one. The mainland Chinese airlines were quick to refund and provided full refund for the unflown segments, while CX is still unwilling to do anything other than changing to first-available date and they seem to be only willing to refund the taxes. Priceline has been refusing to even touch the ticket because they said the airline initiated changes directly to the ticket and they don't even control the ticket anymore, so I had to call the airline. CX then made me pay $50 nonrefundable service fee per ticket to change the dates because I bought from Priceline despite they had canceled the flights. And now I found out not only they will not refund the $50 service fee or any ticket change fees, they will not refund the fare for the unflown segments either. The only refundable amount is some of the taxes and half of the fuel surcharge.

my update flight supposed to be tomorrow Aug 3, but get cancelled again. Call Cathay and they said next available one is Oct 25. But as my ticket is no longer valid (more than 1 year of first segment), I need to pay fair difference which is more than 20k. Anyone has similar experience?

If youre serious about the refund, file a DoT complaint and youll get refunded for any unflown segments. You wont get a refund for fees paid in connection with any changes to your tix. Had same issues as you (date change, invol downgrade, segment removed, etc...) and was ultimately refunded by CX. Bounced a bit between Priceline and CX, but ultimately Priceline facilitated the refund which took a few weeks.

From every situation I always like to see what can learn from it. From this situation recently brought up, I learned dont delay flights too much as global situation can change quickly.

from my situation learned with all the AS miles earned from this and the CC welcome bonus I shouldve splurged on JL F coming back last year. Instead decided to be conservative and fly home in J to save the miles and now have 30,000 AS miles with no certain use until maybe next year. Lesson learned.

Direct Message them on Twitter. They should move your flight date as a courtesy with no charges.

+1

As Amimi stated, reach out to them, either Twitter or email or HUCA. You got an uneducated agent. Several of us have pushed beyond a year because of cancelations. Even their web page says that you can go beyond a year.

Same story -- had to HUCA twice, on the third try got someone that let me move my flight to Nov 7. The first two agents told me that because I didn't have "Flight Protection" they would need to cancel my flights and give me a refund. Third agent changed my flight no problem!
