Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Currently in the club lounge at the Marriott Skycity returning to the US after flying the last leg of our SGN-SEA-SGN tickets a couple weeks ago. We wedged DL One SEA-PVG awards on the front and KTM-SEA one way on an AA fare (upgrading HKG-LAX to F) on the end to create two trips in 6 weeks.
Between the outbound over Thanksgiving in November and the return back to Asia for this trip, my kids hit 5 new countries. The KTM-HKG overnight yesterday on antiquated regional KA seats was the lowlight! But these CX NYE 2018 tickets sure got us out traveling the last 7 weeks!! Heaps of AS miles in my kids’ FF accounts.
Between the outbound over Thanksgiving in November and the return back to Asia for this trip, my kids hit 5 new countries. Cheapest way to get the HAN BPs when you will not be flying to Vietnam?
Plans changed. Talked to CX rep on the phone today. He advised me to just skip the last segment and stay in Hong Kong or buy another ticket to fly elsewhere if needed.
So I will not be taking the last flight, but to get bp's they will want to see something, as they have for all other flights to Vietnam.
While a single entry visa is $25, the total cost from the embassy is $130 including "visa processing, photo printing fee, FedEx overnight".

Plans changed. Talked to CX rep on the phone today. He advised me to just skip the last segment and stay in Hong Kong or buy another ticket to fly elsewhere if needed.
So I will not be taking the last flight, but to get bp's they will want to see something, as they have for all other flights to Vietnam.
While a single entry visa is $25, the total cost from the embassy is $130 including "visa processing, photo printing fee, FedEx overnight".

Cheapest way to get the HAN BPs when you will not be flying to Vietnam?

Alternatively, you can get an e-visa directly for the same $25. It requires taking a photo and uploading, but the visa is good for actual entry once you obtain and print the document - no extra waiting upon landing. Of course, if you have NO intention of going, then why spend the extra $19?
The one clearly unnecessary and wasteful path is surrendering your passport and $130 to get a visa through the embassy.

FYI for those traveling on this fare in late 2020, it looks like there's a massive schedule change (and capacity change, particularly for F) beginning October 25, 2020.

but also I’m really hoping to change my ticket to later in the year, but I see JFK YVR has been cut as of March 29. I’m wondering did they will let me change it to a jfk hkg nonstop

I ran into the same situation having changed my jfk-yvr-hkg segments to June 2020. Basically cancelling jfk-yvr and downgrading yvr-hkg to J. I was advised take this or partial refund. In the end was able to change to jfk-yvr direct with $100 change fee.

Corona virus effect
I have a jfk-hkg-sgn scheduled In mid march coupled with tk round trip from philippines. I am thinking about ways not to go. Philippines has already banned travels from hkg including transit but turkish won’t let me change dates or cancel without fees on their v end. Has anyone been able to get a refund from cathay for half the money? Or get rebooked through another OW carrier so as to skip hkg?

Right now, free changes and refunds are only available for flights through the end of February. I have not seen any offers to fly alternative OW carriers.
However, China just went back to work Monday. I think there is going to be a big jump in cases (sadly) and we will see the waivers extend through the end of March. (US carriers seem to be assuming it will at least be the end of March.) There is no sign that the infection rate is slowing down yet, again sadly.
So right now, I would wait. I think things will clear up in the next 7-10 days and more waivers will come.

I will wait a bit longer before deciding.
I am also wondering if reroutes from Vietnam will be allowed; aka instead of going to HAN/DAD as the destination, change to SIN.
