Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Are you beginning or ending your trip? There's a HKG-HAN Jetstar flight that gets in like 2 hours before the afternoon HAN-HKG that I took.
I don't think anyone has reported a direct turn at HAN, but I imagine if you can get yourself into transit somehow then it's easy, since there's a business class security lane.
There's a business class line at immigration, but there isn't one at exit immigration, so you might be SOL if you can't transit.

Somehow the HKG to YVR segment in F got credited to my AA account instead of my AS account. I put two accounts on file so that I could credit the HAN to HKG segment in Cathay Dragon to AA. Am I SOL on this, since I have already flown the outbound? This should serve as a warning to those who have multiple accounts to double check during check in, even though I know I correctly put each FF program on each segment in the manage by booking portion. This hurts because I was planning to use AS miles to book an award.
EDIT: My boarding pass say AS, but manage my booking says AA on the HKG to YVR segment. Which one is correct? This is so weird.

Direct turn back to HKG, yes, but you have to search up the thread to find it. 
As I recall... the poster flew in and out on the same Dragon plane. I believe CX met them at the gate and lead them through transit security and back to the boarding area.
(Not sure if they needed to show their visa or not.)

There is always a chance that I space opens up, but there is no way anyone can say for sure; even CX. (Depends on demand.) Earlier this year we were able to switch from the afternoon Vietnam codeshare to the morning Dragon flight, at the airport a few hours before boarding JFK-HKG. So it is possible. (No fee to move.)

Alright, got a fresh data point to share now 
Made a direct turn at HAN this week (HKG-HAN-HKG on the same Cathay Dragon plane/crew). Got my return HAN-HKG boarding pass at the lounge in HKG. At HAN, and with about an hour before the return flight, no check-in luggage, and short immigration lines, I could have exited and re-entered immigration just in time for boarding.
Instead, at the immigration hall, I just u-turned to the transit security door that led back up to the departure gates and nonchalantly showed my passport and HAN-HKG bp to the security officer. He looked at it for 5 seconds, and I was then on my way back up to the gates (with extra time to grab a cold drink at the lounge, too). Perhaps it helped that they know my passport does not require a visa to enter Vietnam

Having done turns in HAN several times this year, Love the business class transit time with bp... always less than 10 minutes from arriving at the desk to in the lounge.
It is interesting that direct turns are forbidden, yet, I have never been asked for my inbound ticket. What a year of travel this has been on this fare!

I know what happened.
CX873 changed schedule right on that date. So instead of leaving at 12:25 AM on the 27th, your flight on the 26th was the first flight in the new winter schedule to leave at 11:55PM or whatever.
The flight number would have been changed that day to CX2873 so that there were not two flights with the same flight number operating on the same day.

After a gazillion calls and hours with Ultimate Rewards trying to change my return fight I was finally able to do it. Previously I was told everything such as no availability, "special fare so you're SOL", have to fly before the dec 31st ticket validity, no stopovers etc... It's ridiculous how bad UR agents are!
(Btw I also tried to change it at The Pier, The Wing's little office, twitter and thru calling CX reservations directly. They all said no but probably they left a note on the reservation.)
Anyways I was able to push it for next year with a stop in HK, cost was $115 each. Now, lets hope we don't miss that last segment

I used regular Orbitz and was surprised how easy it was to change the return. The guy was good but generally speaking I have a good experience with Orbitz.

I booked through Orbitz on this run back in March and I tried tremendously to change the return, and nothing. I even got some pretty confident agents on the line and they couldn’t do anything because Cathay had zeroed everything out.Then on the day of departure we had an IRROPS because of a pilot calling in sick and could not change the return either when they called reservations. Everything was “full” and we just gave up.

Just out of curiousity if you had to cancel the last leg of a ticket, say HKG-Vietnam after landing in HKG how would be best to go about it? On app, on website, over Twitter etc?
