CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

- The HKG-SGN flight arrives 10:15AM and departs 11:15AM.
- The MCT for **-CX and CX-** international/international connections is 1 hr. Same is true for the Standard I/I MCT: 1 hr. So technically it would be a legal connection.

I've seen reports of HAN and DAD same-flight turns, but wondering if anyone's tried in SGN.

Thanks in advance for any help!
The problem is you can't go back to the same country where you come from without clearing immigration. The queue to clear immigration could be long and there may also be queue to get boarding pass from CX counter.

Thank you for your reply, but I'm asking if anyone has actual experience in SGN, not what the "official line" is. There are several reports up-thread of people doing this same-plane turnaround easily at HAN and DAD and that CX staff are even helping them.

Again, I'm asking if anyone has actual experience doing this at SGN. FWIW, one of us is APEC, and the other carries a Danish passport, so neither of us need a visa.

Mine is fine as well, I'm assuming they cut cx 845 JFK-HKG 3 times a week as it only operates now on M,W,F,Sa, according to ExpertFlyer, unless I'm missing something?

Found the story... As of October 27, 2019, Cathay Pacific is cutting 3x weekly flights between Hong Kong and New York

Given that YVR is being cut by 3x a week as well, it would seem the JFK-YVR-HKG route is what is being cut 3x a week. (I am guessing you were on that flight.)

I have that flight in November as well. I just checked and it looks fine right now. In fact first is full.

This is a stupid question so I'm apologetic in advance. It's about whether I can avoid visas in Vietnam and China.
Looking online China looks fine. But not sure about 2x twov (transit without visa) in a short space of time.
Seems a little unclear with Vietnam. Seen people say that they bought to single entry visas and stacked. If my arrival and departure is within 24 hours will that be ok?

I plan to fly as follows:

cdg-ams-PEK (xiamen/klm operated)
Then.. PEK-HAN (ticket not bought but departure within 48 hours of arrival at PEK)
HAN (departure within 48 hours)- Hkg-yvr (four day stay).
Yvr-hkg-HAN
Then HAN (departure within 12 hours)-nrt-PEK (JAL) with four day stay.
Then PEK (departure within 12 hours)-ams-cdg

How do you intend to get your boarding pass for HAN-NRT-PEK? If you go through immigration, Vietnam visa is very likely required for you to check-in HAN-NRT-PEK.

Thank you for writing back. I hoped I could check-in online and then pick up a ticket in the transit area. This idea was probably a bit daft so thank you for pointing this out. Double entry visa is expensive so I guess I am trying to be cheap.

CX is cutting 3x weekly CX845 JFK-HKG, and I got rerouted to BR JFK-TPE and CX TPE-HKG. I'm worried that I won't get the original routing credit (ORC) to AS, because I will be flying on a completely different airline. Anyone has experience with this?

I have NOT done transit in SGN so take this for what it is worth... As I recall someone said up thread that SGN does not have I-I transit desks and therefore what you propose would not work. BUT, I could be recalling incorrectly.

HAN has a transit desk to check-in/pick up BPs. We did this in August. Flew in on the New Year's ticket, flew out on an unrelated, different alliance ticket (Thai). They called Thai and someone came to the transit area, checked our passports, gave us our BP's and walked us to the gate, via transit security. (All within 20ish minutes from door open on arriving flight to seated on departure plane. Not recommended. )

Just spent the morning doing HUCAs on the Marco Polo Club line trying to date change. Trip not yet commenced.

HAN-HKG-LAX-IAD-LAX-HKG-HAN

The HAN-HKG is CX codeshare on VN metal and I am in J. Expertflyer shows J0 all of January 2020.

First call CX told me to call my travel agent. He says ticket is not from CX. Interesting. This one was booked directly from CX website.

I was able to make changes online a few weeks back. It did offer me some dates for a 100 dollar fee but did not go through with is as dates were unclear.

Now that I ready to pull the trigger, website shows Your ticket is not eligible to change because of restrictive fare terms and conditions. Please contact our Global Contact Centres for alternative. [IBE_EXT0051_S007].

Second call agent was looking around for me +/- 7 days around my preferred dates and found nothing.

My next strategy will be to first call and change the HAN-HKG on VN metal to KA metal. There's a KA flight departing 10 mins later. I think taking the VN out of the picture might make it easier to call back and date change?!

Edit: Third call the agent says AA have no CX codeshare in A bucket. FWIW Experflyer shows A2 with POS set to HK or US. I have no way of checking vietnam POS.

yes, they have to give you first unless you accept voluntary downgrade. Only suggestion is to find flights with F space and ask your flight be changed as you did not agree to Biz seat.
Global321 and ft543 like this.

using BA Avios award system to find CX first class changeable availability? That sounds interesting...Is it because first class award and the new year fare have the same fare class? So if you can find New York- HK in first award you should be able to change your return to that date?

I believe so. However it is not 100%. Some agents go with the 'can't change the ticket' story. They don't say they can't see it, just say they can't change it. In which case, HUCA. We have done it twice... found it on BA and then called and switch.

A multiple entry visa on arrival is U$50 at the airport and depending upon the agency in the US you use, between $5 and $45. Takes two to three days.

Thank you buddy! Had a quick search, the NYC HKG first award inventory for this year is indeed depleted. Next year would probably be a better bet..

You realize changing a ticket before departure will reprice the entire ticket according to the fare rules? If you're unable to get them to do this as DM, there's no way this can work for anybody else.
