CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Might be able to change the DAD-SGN-SIN to the 9th with penalty fees. Could get CX to change me to SGN on the 8th and book something on the 9th to SIN using the residual value of the Vietnam Air ticket. Unlikely that I can ask CX to put me on one of their HKG-SIN flights on the afternoon of the 8th? Or I can just ditch the HKG-DAD and buy a HKG-SIN ticket with cash or an award.

Any suggestions? Other options? (I have looked at changing the JFK-HKG F sector ahead by a day but will miss connect on HGK-DAD and only have the same flight on the 8th.)
try to ask CX to fly you directly to SIN with such long schedule change.

Not that I would recommend this... but we did a 20ish minute turn in HAN last week.

We had planned a tight 1-hour tight turn in HAN. We figured business to business class, bp's in hand, no checked bags, and an HKG-HAN flight that is mostly on time (or 10-20 minutes late) was an acceptable risk. Worst case we buy cheap tickets to Thailand for later in the day. (In NYC when we tried to do OLCI we discovered we could not get our bps.)

Unfortunately for us, HKG-HAN was significantly delayed. We landed just after 10, to the gate around 10:10. (HAN-BKK on time for a 10:35 am departure. So we had around 20 minutes to departure when we deplaned.)
Jogged - a true jog - all the way to transfer desk. Thankfully no line.
Transfer desk guy casually calls Thai. (Now about 10:20.) A few minutes later he sees us getting nervous and casually says "don't worry she is on her way". Five minutes later, a Thai representative shows up, checks our passports, takes a picture of each of us with our passports and bp's together. Says 'we go now'. Again, lucky there is no line anywhere.
Another jog through HAN and we were on the plane around 10:30, with the door closing behind us.

Piece of cake!

When checking in at JFK do CX personnel login to vietnam visa computers to check validity of the visa or did they just eyeball the document? Why did you get a real visa if you were never going all the way to DAD?

You really gonna risk your business/first class ticket on a $30 electronic visa?

change flight

Hi guys, long time lurker, first post in here.

My flights would be this September and I booked directly with CX, and I’m trying to change my inbound segment (JFK-YVR-HKG-DAD).

Looking at the suggestions from this thread, tried to do dummy booking with CX on one way JFK-DAD, and found a standard first at the date that I’m looking for. Called US agent, and she said that she couldn’t find any availability and what I’m looking at might just be for “new tickets”. Also asked for stopover at HKG, and she still can’t find any availability.

Did I do something wrong here? Just started on this mileage world early this year, so I’m a newbie.

Regards,
G

Agent couldn’t get me to DAD earlier in the week nor would she agree to rerouting me to SIN. However she was able to get me to HAN two days earlier which actually will give me a day-and-a-half in the capital for sight seeing, something not on my original itinerary. So will take that and I can fly to DAD to hook up with my original DAD-SGN-SIN on the 8th...just hoping there are no typhoons that week. And my positioning flight to NYC can be changed for C$25 with AC. (I got myself a multiple entry one-year visa as I had planned to return next year to the region and pick up Hanoi in addition to venturing beyond into Cambodia.) And as this was a sked change there was no change fee.

Welcome to FT.

To start, you need to look for A fare availability to HKG and J to DAD. Expert Flyer can help with that. You can get a 5 day trial for free.

If you can find A inventory JFK-HKG on one day and J inventory on another, that helps to feed the agent availability.

While that does not guarantee agents will see availability, it is the first step. (Agents can sometimes see it with these fares, sometimes not.)

It is much easier for agents to find availability after you have flown the first segments (DAD-HKG-JFK).

thank you for the reply, sir!

I also got questions regarding the journey. This would be my first time in F. Only ever been on J two times before, and all on short haul and narrow body.

While I’m lucky enough to grab this mistake fare, my dad is not so lucky and he get Y ticket to join me on this trip. I’m seriously thinking of switching with him on one segments. Do you guys have any experience with this? Do I need to ask the FA if they’ll let him on my seat in F, and I’ll be in Y? Before learning about miles and points, we used the be that guy that always travel on LCC airlines, so this would be very different experiences than what we are used to.

Thanks for the tips everyone.

Regards,
G

Not a mistake fare... New Year's Fare!

After bp scanning, you could simply give him your bp and take his. Really that simple. (No one is checking IDs on the plane.) If anyone did ask him, he could simply tell him the truth... you switched with him. I highly doubt anyone will inquire or care.

If you ask there is a (remote) chance they say no and you will not be able to do such a generous switch.

same last name, should be easy to switch with him after you scan through boarding. Board with him and then switch.

Bless you for treating him.

Thanks guys. I’ll try switching after bp scanning. I’ll better wait to check in with him when they announced Y boarding then?

Btw, maybe moderators can add my flight to the post?

15/9 KA 221 DAD-HKG J
16/9 CX 888 HKG-JFK F
22/9 CX 865 JFK-HKG F (not gonna be with dad, so I can guest 1 here)
24/9 KA 224 HKG-DAD J

I am glad I saw this. Spouse and I are on the YVR-HAN leg Oct 1. CX 888 Class A. Can we each invite someone into the wing lounge in HKG? I figure worst case we will try to pick up someone wandering around.

Got a helpful agent who was great in searching for availability from different airports for future dates... paid fare difference and change fee of $300 total ^

(Outbound already flown)
