Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Not always true. If the JFK-YVR and YVR-HKG flights on your itinerary have different flight numbers then you will receive credit for the full distance of both segments.

If you are saying fly CX865, clear customs, spend the night and fly the next day on CX819, sure. My guess would be CX865 to CX865, with 1+ day stopover would get you full credit as well.

- CX888 Sun 18 Aug 2019 HKG to YVR
KA294 got delayed 40min (ETA in HKG 23:35). Boarding of CX888 starting at 23:50 and departure is at 00:30 on 18th. Gate closes 10min before departure.
I assume should be doable. Will CX give buggy service or personal assistance in f on tight connections?

MCT for CX to CX is 50 minutes, so you are still fine with MCT.
You will arrive at the Dragon terminal and bus to the main terminal where you will clear security and head to the gate. The biggest delay I have had there is waiting for the bus to fill up.
Once in the main terminal at that time, security lines tend to be very short.
Net net if you have 50 minutes you should be fine.
One thing I have not tried... there is security at the Dragon terminal, right by the bus. I have never seen a line there. I wonder if you can clear security there and then take the APM back to T1. It might be quicker. There are airport people there at the bus. You could ask them while you wait for the bus to fill.

'Meet and drive' - no. 'Meet and escort' - absolutely. They will have staff with placards for tight connections and will rush you through if possible. (If not, you'll be advised of the revised flights.)

I guess standards have gone down at CX. I've had that drive twice flying F and connecting even to a J regional flight. That was maybe 5-6 years ago. Fun zipping down that long tunnel back to the main terminal from the pier. However, wasn't aware that KA flights arrive at a different terminal. Do they depart from there too? I'll be doing a tight 50-minute connection from my JFK flight to my DAD one.

Hope so. But, as it is not an illegal connection AND from the mid terminal, I would not go in with that expectation. I have had 55-minute connections with no card and no help.
In my experience of 4ish flights HKG to HAN this year, no. We have been bussed to the plane from T1. But, DAD could be different.

Successfully change my return from YVR-HKG-HAN to BOS-HKG-HAN for $85 in fare + $100 change fee per person. Also changed the day. I used EF and looked for A space and saw BOS-HKG was A4 and he was able to do it. Will also earn a little more EQM/EQD!

i have not had luck changing return in spite of ample A space showing on EF, agent claimed that space is only for "new tickets"?????
