CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

My other posts on this thread (including a very detailed report in #2411 , which you Liked) already discuss all the techniques I learned from others, tweaked and tried, and then shared with Edan217. The step-by-step suggestions I offered by PM were for their specific situation, and since I don't hold a ticket issued by CX, I can't test it myself. If the solution works and Edan217 wishes to share, you may hear all about it. If it doesn't work, then why inject bad advice?

I take your counsel to heart, and look forward to the day I'll have thousands of relevant posts to my name. Until then, I urge you to consider that a forum filled with people exactly like you would make most of you redundant. I humbly request patience for those of us still learning and trying things out, until we have something *we* decide is worth sharing.

Cheers!
Loved your post #2411 ; great idea. And I plan to try to use it for an upcoming flight.

When you say I have info and I will send a pm, how can we not think there is something more you have to add? In the future, it might be helpful to reference your previous post and simply pm the person if there is something relevant only to them.

Again, great thoughts in #2411 .

Welcome to FT.

I don't understand why people are still searching ITAMatrix for Vietnam POS. ITAMatrix shows tons of phantom availability-- just look at the whole month of December for instance. CX website shows the exact availability if you make a dummy booking for a new ticket. The only very slight inaccuracies with CX website are AA connections, because the website times out searching 7 days worth of departures and 7 days worth of arrivals. However the lowest A price, if displayed, is really there in a connection, which the website duly fetches when refined to exact dates.

Well, what are people supposed to do to check for availability before calling?

Hi Unionruler, I don't dispute the accuracy of what you write, but I have two data points that don't seem to fit:
* CX (Vietnam site, dummy booking) shows NO Standard First YVR-HAN for the entire schedule. None. However, by using ITA matrix to force a stopover in HKG of 24+ hours, I identified a single date in October that accepted a ticket change. (I didn't ask for other dates to test the theory; I wanted my reschedule confirmed before any wiggling)
* CX (Vietnam site, dummy booking) shows Standard First for practically EVERY date SFO-HAN, yet Edan217 was unable to get a ticket change for any day in September despite numerous calls. Using the same forced-stopover search in ITA I've suggested they try a handful of dates - hopefully they'll report back.

Any idea why the dummy booking seems to be showing inaccurate info (or why CX call center is ignoring it)? I'm good with my new ticket but clearly others can benefit from your better info.

In my humble opinion, this was improvidently granted, because stopovers aren't supposed to trump rule logic. If POS/ married segments does not allow it both ways (i.e. HAN POS YVR-HAN on your YVR-HKG date, and HAN POS YVR-HAN on your new HKG-HAN date), then it should not have been granted. But because the change was manual somebody forgot to check or set POS when checking.

Can you give me one or two sets of dates-- I cannot see a single date that a HAN-SFO return ticket is sold at Standard. It is all Flex, and in some cases only 1 seat left. Incidentally HAN-YVR looks even worse like some dates simply not available. Btw you can start from any site because CX website switches POS to your point of origin.

So basically, you're screwed.

Ugh. This is why it's hard to search return space when one has already flown the outbound. I yield. My examples were based on one-way searches where I attempted Vietnam POS but US departure.

This leads again to the real question: What's to be done if you still want to change the ticket?

FWIW - We have changed the return. Called CX to do it. In one case I was going to misconnect due to delay from my AA connecting flight. The agent found replacement flights in first ~5 days and ~7 days later. (Opted for ~5 days later.) Paid the $100 and flew the new dates.

I think it will be easier and easier to change these tickets as the year moves on as fewer will be left in the system. For my next change, I plan to try to book the JFK-HKG on one day next year and the HKG-HAN a few days later.
Maybe it will happen, maybe not.

I never lose sight of the fact that this is the deal of a lifetime and I will be happy to fly my original dates if I cannot change the flights.

Thank you thank you thank you to CX for honoring the fare!

2020 dates are reasonably available but 2019 is tough because the real A class customers have bought up some balance of the already depleted inventory according to their holiday plans/ school term. There should be sporadic 2019 dates, but like you said, it's quite possible for a whole month to be not available.

A little update
so first I called a CX agent in Israel (where I live)
the agent was searching and couldn't find any availability on the dates I wanted ,I asked to change origin of departure to lax or nyc or yvr
but he still didn't find anythjng .and told me to try to call next week .
1 day later I said I will try an agent in the US.
and the agent couldn't find anything too from SFO
mao asked to try from other cities and she said ,she is not allowed to change that .if I change dates I need to have exactly the same flight I told her I know many people who changed not only dates ,but she insisted .
i could have asked for a supervisor but I let go as 1 day before any way nothing was available.
i will try again in a few days
hope to get lucky somehow .
if not I will need to change for 2020 as I can't fly on my original dates .
if someone has a telephone of an agent that made more effort for him I would appreciate the number
thanks

Hi.. can any fare expert help..
I am holding a C class ticket bought during this ‘sale’, and is half way into my journey. Does the rules allow upsell to A class if it’s available, and would the fare diff be most probably marginal? I am trying to upgrade on the laxhkg sector if its possible.

thanks for any inputs, greatly appreciated!

A C fare probably allows an upsell since it's the second highest of the CX business fare classes, but there may be a fee. Not sure if CX will have put additional restrictions on the ticket. Keep in mind, also, that you would under no circumstances be upfaring to the mistake A fare. You would be upfaring to whatever the first class fare is at the time, and possibly a one-way F fare, which would be $10K-$15K USD.
