Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Changing HKG-SGN flights
To those who mentioned being able to switch flights on the HK-VN segments, at what point were you able to get them to switch you?
I'm looking to move to a later departure from HKG (still on CX metal) and I'm trying to figure out where I have the best chances of getting them to switch me without incurring a change fee (by calling up beforehand / at the US departure point when checking in / at the US boarding gate / on arrival in HKG / at some other point). I have an OTA issued ticket and this will be my last segment.
I'm looking to move to a later departure from HKG (still on CX metal) and I'm trying to figure out where I have the best chances of getting them to switch me without incurring a change fee (by calling up beforehand / at the US departure point when checking in / at the US boarding gate / on arrival in HKG / at some other point). Is there a chance that HKG-YVR-JFK flights with a single flight number for both segments will credit as 8072 flown miles (HKG-JFK) instead of 8841 flown miles (HKG-YVR-JFK)?
Also, if HKG-YVR and YVR-JFK flights depart on different dates (again, with the same flight number) is there a chance that they would both be credited to the departure date of the first segment?

For those making changes to these tickets prior to flying any segments - does the entire new itinerary need to be completed prior to 2020 for the changes to ticket successfully?
That is to say would a new itinerary with the HKG-DAD/SGN/HAN segment on 1/1 or 1/2 ticket if the XXX-HKG segment was flown in December?

Is there a chance that HKG-YVR-JFK flights with a single flight number for both segments will credit as 8072 flown miles (HKG-JFK) instead of 8841 flown miles (HKG-YVR-JFK)?
Also, if HKG-YVR and YVR-JFK flights depart on different dates (again, with the same flight number) is there a chance that they would both be credited to the departure date of the first segment?

To those who mentioned being able to switch flights on the HK-VN segments, at what point were you able to get them to switch you?
I'm looking to move to a later departure from HKG (still on CX metal) and I'm trying to figure out where I have the best chances of getting them to switch me without incurring a change fee (by calling up beforehand / at the US departure point when checking in / at the US boarding gate / on arrival in HKG / at some other point). I have an OTA issued ticket and this will be my last segment.

I tried the ITA matrix like some should here
and I got resulats showing me the pricing on Cathay for those flights
but how do I know if it has availability to change my flight for 100$
I already flew from Han to Sfo
now I have 24.10 the way back
but I want to change date for September .
maybe I am doing something wrong ?

Have you actually tried to change the ticket yet? When I search from the CX Vietnam site, for one-way trips SAN-HAN in September, I see "standard" A availability every single day that month. I think that's what ITA is showing you. Maybe a lot of capacity was sucked up for JFK-Vietnam, but I speculate that your routing was not tapped as heavily before the fare was shut down. In any event, searching won't get you re-ticketed :-) If you booked through the CX website originally, try changing your ticket there. If you booked through Orbitz or Expedia, try calling them and asking for the date you want. If that doesn't work, then HUCA and try asking specifically for a stopover in HKG of at least one day before continuing to Hanoi. And please report back!
when I checked ITA matrix there was availability everyday in A.
I also called CX and they didn't find me anything ..

My other posts on this thread (including a very detailed report in #2411 , which you Liked) already discuss all the techniques I learned from others, tweaked and tried, and then shared with Edan217. The step-by-step suggestions I offered by PM were for their specific situation, and since I don't hold a ticket issued by CX, I can't test it myself. If the solution works and Edan217 wishes to share, you may hear all about it. If it doesn't work, then why inject bad advice?
I take your counsel to heart, and look forward to the day I'll have thousands of relevant posts to my name. Until then, I urge you to consider that a forum filled with people exactly like you would make most of you redundant. I humbly request patience for those of us still learning and trying things out, until we have something *we* decide is worth sharing.
