CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

you wouldn't necessarily have the HKG HAN boarding pass (i did not) because they can't check you in until the day of departure and if you are leaving the US they wouldn't be able to give you the boarding pass as you are technically leaving the next day. that is because you are probably checked in before midnight (even though the flight leaves after midnight)

when i asked my bags to check through to HKG, they just told me i would have to check in again to HAN at HKG - which i was fine with and had no plans of checking in that segment at all

You are the first person to have reported NOT getting the HKG-HAN bp. In my many many trips to Asia with connecting flights on one ITN, I have always gotten the connecting bp. Even the one time we had the ~10 hour layover in HKG, we were able to print our bp's at home in the USA - 24 hours before the USA departure and probably close to 48 hours before the HKG-HAN flight.

I guess I am the second person then. I didn't get mine either.

When I checked in at YVR for YVR-HKG-HAN they couldn't give me the HAN boarding pass (at just over 24 hours before the HKG-HAN departure, which is on Vietnam Air metal). It was alright, I told them, I would just get the boarding pass in HKG

Immigration at YVR was fun -- I was doing a direct turn back to HKG. No option to transit (though I didn't ask too many questions!), so I had to go through immigration, go back upstairs to get boarding pass, and then go through security again. Immigration agent was a bit confused but I told him I was on a mileage run and he asked how far I was from reaching my elite status. He was well aware of the practice and was either interested in it or testing me to see if I really was that crazy!

By the way, when checking in at YVR the agent had no desire to see my Vietnam Visa (I guess the extra $$ for multi-entry was a waste but peace of mind...). Nor did they care one bit if I had a ticket out of Vietnam (I did not).

my trips to asia sometimes involve stopovers on one itin so in that case you wouldn't get a boarding pass for sure. but in this instance, i guess since they took my request to check bags only to HKG, they didn't bother checking me in on the HAN flight.

Sure, that makes sense on a stopover. And it makes sense that they would not check you into the connecting flight if you are going to pick up your bags.

Many thanks to you three with this information. I should have said that I was on a totally separate itinerary AA TUL-YVR a couple of days (2 day layover) before the Cathay flight YVR-HKG-HAN. It is apparently up in the air what boarding passes I will get when checking in at YVR and I guess my only question is if I do get a boarding pass for HKG-HAN, how should I 'check out' in HKG when I am ready to leave the airport. And if I don't have that last boarding pass, do I even need to do anything?

As an aside, I am directing my mileage earning on these flights to AA, and spouse is directing them to Alaska. But I still have 36,000 Asia miles that will probably expire before I get back to that area and could really come in handy if we decide to go to SIN from HKG. But, this would mean that at the same time I am telling Cathay I can't continue on to HAN, I would be holding an award ticket out of HKG. Any issues?

Best of all worlds would be if I could somehow change my HKG-HAN business ticket into any value for going a few days later to chiang mai or sin, or ??? In any class.

World of all worlds would be my having to pay a change or cancellation fee just because I didn't want to go on to HAN.

I sincerely appreciate your input. Thank you for your time.

Will YVR issue my YVR-HKG BP if I don't have a (second) entry to DAD when I tell them that I just want the YVR-HKG BP or will they deny?

Other option would be OCI to get the BP to HKG.

i think that OCI will still get you flagged at the gate for them to check for your visa. i know i tried to OCI once to vietnam from HKG and i was flagged before i can board.

of the many times i travel out of HKG i don't think the check in desk cares much about whether you have an existing ticket. they just ask where you are going and check you in. if they ask, you can always say something along the line of you have a work meeting that came up or something (esp bc you booked right before depparture). the check in agents don't usually ask much questions IME

Before you board at YVR you will need to show your visa or onward bp out of Vietnam.

You can do OLCI, but at the gate you will be flagged / called up and asked to show one of the two above. AFAIK there is no way around that.

Successful Reschedule of Return

This is for fare basis AAARRVN8 which booked into A/J. I booked via Priceline. Calling them was useless as they always quoted a really high $ figure, even for flights with clear A/J availability. I flew the outbound already, so that opened up calling CX directly for changes instead. Preparing for the worst, I just called, and the change was actually super easy - probably thanks to advanced research into the issue. I made sure to feed the agent flights with definite A/J availability. Note, I was only able to get that by forcing a stopover in HKG, which I am fine with.

What I did was search using ITA matrix like this:

I was looking for late 2019 or early 2020. Late 2019 was basically non-existent. I was worried about booking into 2020, since some reported that ticket validity is one year from purchase, although my receipt didn't mention that, just one year from travel commencement and also something about only until Jan 31 2020. I decided to try a date in early January first, and that worked. Only owed the $100 change fee per passenger, plus a minor tax for HKG of about ~$10-20 (too excited at that point to care )

So basically, if you want to reschedule just the return flight, you may have luck in early 2020. There were also some dates from now until October open, but Nov/Dec were completely unavailable.

This information was very helpful to me in changing my own ticket. I booked with Orbitz, HAN-JFK-(YVR)-HAN, and included a stopover of one week in YVR on the return to allow me to go home to Seattle (in case I had to abandon the trip for some reason). The final legs to HKG-HAN were scheduled for early tomorrow morning, and I could not finish the trip yet due to work requirements - so I needed to reschedule. I did not realize on New Year's Eve, of course, that CX would remove all the A inventory from YVR to Vietnam. (And I do mean all of it; I had Orbitz and CX agents looking from 9/1 through end of schedule in July 2020 and finding nothing). However - as alexj7 points out, if you build in a stopover in HKG, it defeats the married-segment block on A seats on CX865 continuing from JFK via YVR to HKG to Vietnam, and I was able to get the ticket changed. I assume this would work for any North America departure point, but obviously I could not test that theory with my one ticket.

Gory details: I called 4 times. The first call to Orbitz located an itinerary in late September with a two-day stopover in HKG. I was not ready to pull the trigger until I checked on a possible one-way return to Seattle. Unfortunately when i called back the next day, the new Orbitz agent was not able to figure it out. She called her CX support line and they told her not to do stopovers, "that's really not allowed." She suggested I call CX. The first half-hour call to CX was unsuccessful in locating a single through ticket from YVR to Hanoi. So, with three hours on the phone already in the books, but desperate to avoid throwing away the ticket, I made the 4th call for the win:

First, I used expertflyer to locate A class availability from HKG to YVR and J onward to HAN. As you know if you have scoured this thread, this is not dispositive because of Point of Sale and married segment restrictions imposed by CX. However, you can also use the Matrix search alexj7 shared to find dates with through A availability from JFK (or wherever your return trip originates) using Vietnam point of sale. I picked a date that worked, asked for the HKG stopover, and got my ticket. In addition to the $100 change fee, there is a negligible fare difference due to the stopover in HKG and a $60USD fee for calling CX instead of using Orbitz (this new fee was a surprise, but I was not about to argue before my ticket was issued!)

Was this process frustrating and overly complicated? Absolutely. But certainly worth it to me for another tin of caviar, a side trip to Sapa, and about 21,000 more Alaska miles. You can do better than I did by asking right out of the gate for a stopover, with dates to try. You might even be able to get an OTA agent to get it right the first time and save $60. Good luck, and enjoy your trip.

To confirm - Cathay Dragon segments don't earn Alaska miles even for segments with CX flight numbers right?

For example CX5227 & CX5228.

AS site says: "Eligible flight numbers 0100–0999" which I'm assuming means no credit for any CX codeshares.

Am I understanding it correctly that they will not even allow me to go to HKG?

I have flown outbound and wanted to change the return to have a stopover in HK instead of sameday transit.
The system is not allowing me to do so. Is that because the fare rule or can I do this by calling?

Correct. No Alaska miles on the Dragon flights. Others have reported using multiple FF numbers. (i.e. credit the long haul to Alaska and the Dragon to AA.)

Correct, with one possible exception. What I am not sure about... if you built in a stopover in HKG they might not check for Vietnam as CX would only be issuing bp to HKG.
