Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Bought on Expedia and confirmed "A" availability on Expedia on the dates I wanted including adding a stopover in YVR. $100 change fee plus $53 in additional fare I am assuming for the stopover in YVR. Changed flights to April and June 2020

Bought on Expedia and confirmed "A" availability on Expedia on the dates I wanted including adding a stopover in YVR. $100 change fee plus $53 in additional fare I am assuming for the stopover in YVR. Changed flights to April and June 2020

I'm trying to change the HAN-HKG segment of my HAN-HKG-YVR to the earlier KA flight of the day.
HAN-HKG was in J. If I search ITA Matrix for the earlier flight with Hanoi as the Sales City, I see that 2J is clearly available.
Called CX to make the change. They say the flight is "all sold out" for the purposes of changing an existing ticket, even though there's space available when making a new booking.
Can someone explain to me the tricks that CX are pulling here? I tried to listen to the CX agents' explanations (multiple of them!) but I never fully understood before they ran out of patience.

I'm trying to change the HAN-HKG segment of my HAN-HKG-YVR to the earlier KA flight of the day.
HAN-HKG was in J. If I search ITA Matrix for the earlier flight with Hanoi as the Sales City, I see that 2J is clearly available.
Called CX to make the change. They say the flight is "all sold out" for the purposes of changing an existing ticket, even though there's space available when making a new booking.
Can someone explain to me the tricks that CX are pulling here? I tried to listen to the CX agents' explanations (multiple of them!) but I never fully understood before they ran out of patience.

Best option is to see if you can change the HKG-HAN leg to a few days later. There are some reports here that this was possible at the airport.

My plan so far is to go to the lounge upon arrival in HKG, get a shower, and whatever else I might need, and then ask to be taken to immigration. This plan worked on the may trip as far as getting someone to take me to immigration so that we could spend the 10 hour layover in Hong Kong rather than the lounge. There was resistance, but I am confident it can be achieved again.
I don't want for Cathay to have to look for us or otherwise suffer because of my absence. By the time that flight leaves, I will already be somewhere else. Although it just occurred to me that I was hoping to use my cathay miles to get to the next destination. May have to rethink that. I haven't picked my next destination yet, but likely will be chiang mai, singapore, or Bali. So, when and how is the best time to advise Cathay that I will not be on that HKG-HAN flight which is on Cathay Dragon in business 10 hours after I arrive in HKG. Before reading this, I was going to just go to the desk and tell them my spouse couldn't continue and please take us to immigration so we can see a doctor.
As an aside, would there be any hope of somehow being able to get any value out of the HKG-HAN business class ticket towards another destination? I tried it on the phone but no karma. It would probably be worth the change fee if I could get a ticket to one of the cities mentioned above.
I should say that I will be flying in first from yvr-HKG and planning to go to the Wing lounge.
