CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

hi there,

Apologies if this has been asked, clicked through 20 over pages but can't find the answers.

Can I double dip CX MPC for SC and AS for Miles?

Apologies if this has been asked, clicked through 20 over pages but can't find the answers.

Can I double dip CX MPC for SC and AS for Miles?
Short answer - No.

Anyone flown on Vietnam airlines for the SGN portion? Wondering what lounge access we will have.

I find my self in this situation where my new CX flight ex-HKG is booked via avios scheduled to leave 10 minutes after HKG-DAD. I am trying to figure out the best option. i.e. do I check in to either/both/neither itineraries? Also trying to figure out what happens at JFK when my passport is scanned, will the agent see my second ex-HKG flight?

Unless you are willing/able to change to a non-CX flight, you have to roll the dice and hope it does not cancel.

Assuming you want to keep these flights I think the best you can do is...
1. Obviously, you need to check-in to the JFK-HKG-DAD.
2. When you get to HKG, uncheck in for the HKG-DAD flight (online or call). Then check-in for other flight.

Good luck.

Thanks.

Do you know if it will be possible to uncheck in via CX mobile app?

In theory, you can do it online.
You could also try to DM the CX twitter team. (Others have reported success.)
Worst case, Skype call from Hong Kong.

I would be afraid of going to the transfer desk and speaking to them. If they run your passport it may bring both reservations up. (I am not sure how that works on the backend.)

One way or another you will want to be unchecked in from the DAD flight. Many reports of them searching the lounge looking for missing passengers. What you don't want - if you are going down this path - is for them to start looking for you, pull up your name and itinerary and seeing the second one. An agent could push it to reservations who has the power to cancel both.

I am too risk-averse to try this, but please report back. (Or PM me.)

Good luck and I hope it works!

Bumping this back up. So, JFK now requires a ticket to show onward from Vietnam? I haven't seen this yet...

For anyone dropping that final leg a cheap air Asia flight at $30’seems like good insurance if onward flight is being checked.

I did this earlier in June and no one asked for an onward ticket. They did ask for my Vietnam visa, but that was it.

I did this trip earlier in June on a UK passport and wasn’t asked for either a visa or onward travel ticket from Vietnam.

Correct me if I am wrong, but UK citizens are allowed entry without a visa. Correct?

Indeed, but only once within 30 days. I had visa for 2nd time as I returned within 30 days. This was checked and also my onwards ticket out of Vietnam. I guess it is pot luck if anyone checks or not, I personally would not risk it and as someone said, just get a cheap Air Asia ticket etc to be safe.

Yes, but you cannot return within 30 days without a visa. I had an electronic visa for the return trip as it was within the 30 day window. This wasn’t checked during checkin.
