Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Got a delay notification for the KA HKG-HAN which was roughly an hour. Contacted Cathay via Twitter and said the delay is going to cause me issues with my connecting flight on a separate ticket and that they should take me off the flight as I'll try and organize a new ticket from HKG to my final destination.
They replied:
I wouldn't have taken this flight anyway but I thought it's a good - clean - excuse not to use that coupon and to formally notify them. At least with Twitter there's a record of it should there ever be any dispute about this.

I am planning to fly HKG-DAD and DAD-HKG-JFK on separate PNR's but both are Cathay. Can I checkthrough in my luggage in HKG so that I don't have to pick it up in DAD - that way I can easily swing around in DAD?

No luck here trying to change to April 2020. My initial departure is July 2019. Called CX and agent said ticket must be used within 1 year from date of purchase

Today is my flight from Hanoi-hkg-sfo
i will be arriving in Hanoi 6 hours before the flight
I have a visa for Vietnam,but I am not planing on leaving the airport
do I still need to go through immigration there?
Mans about the lounge ,the flight out of Vietnam is with Cathay dragon,what lounge do I use ?

No longer seeing options to make changes / cancel these bookings online on the Orbitz site. When selecting cancel I now get an error page. When selecting change the "Continue" button never becomes clickable. Can someone else who has a booking with Orbitz see if they still have the option to cancel / make changes online?
I've had issues with managing Orbitz bookings before but haven't seen this specific issue. Do I need to call in and ask them to pull up the reservation (eg. re-sync my Orbitz trip info with the current CX record)?

Easy... if you know what you are doing.
1. Head towards customs/immigration/transit, go down the escalator into the immigration hall. Turn hard left. (Cut through the lines if they are long, You are not clearing.)
2. If you DO NOT have your connecting bp, go straight to the transit desks and get your bp. Then go to transit security.
3. If you have your connecting bp, another hard left and you will show your bp/passport to the security person.
4. Up the escalator.
5. If you are in biz on your connecting flight, go to the far end where there is a business security line, which is way shorter.
6. You are now in the departure area.
With your connecting bp (and in business) you can be in the departure lounge less than 15 minutes from the time you get off the plane, 25 minutes if you are connecting in coach with bp. Add 10-15 minutes if you need to get your connecting bp.
No need and no problem if you show them your connecting bp or your connecting itinerary.

Choice 1 - ACV/NIA Business Lounge. When you clear transit security, you turn left and go upstairs. They will tell you to come back later because you only have 3 hours to stay in the lounge. You can just say you want your three hours to start now and stay. (We were never asked to leave.) It is very crowded until the ANA flight leaves. Then it is empty. There will be sauce and spaghetti and a few other mains, along with cold cuts. 3 local beers and a few others and an open bar. Lots of seating, few outlets.
Choice 2 - Song Hong Business Lounge. When you clear transit security, you turn right and walk down several gates. It is next to the Vietnam Airlines Lotus Lounge. We use PP to go to this one. (PP says 3 hours but no one even mentioned it.) Food/drink is about the same, but the seating is nicer and there are more outlets. The internet can get spotty as the lounge gets fuller. Last time we just hung there and did a longer walk to the plane.

Has anyone done any immediate turns in DAD recently? I am planning to turnaround in DAD next week, the flight arrives at 7.15 and leaves at 8.10. I do have a visa but am hoping for a transit situation. Am I SOL?

Just flew DAD-HKG-JFK in F, I was with 2 other passengers who also originated at DAD and confirmed they were on same fare. That means 3 out of 6 seats in F were on this fare. Took SQ EWR-SIN to get to Asia, and unsurprisingly, food on SQ is miles ahead of CX, but SQ J seat still sucks.

Data Point on missed connection, prior to missing it.
My positioning flight on AA was delayed by 3+ hours. I would have misconnected to CX in JFK. I was able to call CX and reschedule the flight for 5 days later. ($100 change fee). There was nothing earlier in First, but there were a few options 5-6 days out from my misconnect. (I called CX prior to CX JFK flight departing.) The whole process took about 30 minutes. I did not ask about a J seat, so maybe I could have gotten out earlier in J.
Side note - AA policy on 3+ hour wx delay sucks. Your only choices are fly next day or refund. I had to refund and buy new - cost me an extra $100.
