Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

From SFO you could head to Napa Valley if you are a wine drinker. LA, San Diego, and Las Vegas are also a short, cheap flight away.
I myself will be finally taking this fare in August. Very excited

So for OTA bookings, after flying the outbound, do we still have to contact the OTA to change the return leg?
I remember I used to be able to do it with the airline directly in this case, but still got the following message when I tried online: “This booking was not created by our listed travel agent or point of sales.

Just an FYI for anyone jumping off in Hong Kong. I am currently on my way to Danang. This is my second trip to Vietnam on these fares. At check-in, I was asked "Has this visa been used before?" (It had not). The agent then appeared to record the number of the visa. I did not notice this on my first trip where they just looked at the visa briefly. My point is just a warning to those who are getting off in Hong Kong to think twice before using an old visa because you know you are not entering Vietnam. I would be interested to know if anyone else has had the same experience.

My HAN-HKG leg is with KA J, do you know how early they let us check in with my bag? I'd like to arrive plenty early making sure I won't miss my flight. They let us use the VN lounge?

I can't exactly remember details, but immigration and security was very fast and possibly had some elite lines.
We had access to the VN lounge which was comfortable and had some food and drinks. Employees at a counter would make coffee or pour wine. Perfect for getting ready to actually have a meal on the flight.
It seems like the gate was right outside the lounge but I am a little foggy on that. Certainly wasn't a hike. I wouldn't have left much earlier just to be in that lounge. Traffic was light at that time of day, and it was raining.

May not be much help as far as how early you can checkin. We left the Metropole in Hanoi at 7 am for the 10:35 flight. took about 30 minutes to get to the airport, maybe less. Used the Hanoi Transfer Service that we found on the internet, and they were fantastic for scheduling airport transportation. Very affordable, like $12 to 18 depending upon how big your vehicle needed to be. http://hanoitransferservice.com
I can't exactly remember details, but immigration and security was very fast and possibly had some elite lines.
We had access to the VN lounge which was comfortable and had some food and drinks. Employees at a counter would make coffee or pour wine. Perfect for getting ready to actually have a meal on the flight.
It seems like the gate was right outside the lounge but I am a little foggy on that. Certainly wasn't a hike. I wouldn't have left much earlier just to be in that lounge. Traffic was light at that time of day, and it was raining.

I think I've used Hanoi transfer service when I first came 10 years ago. With advancement like Google maps and Grab, and Google Translate when needed, now I can travel more like locals do and pay what locals pay, no more haggling.
I'll run some searches about the VN lounge, but One Mile At a Time has recently posted a review about Song Hong Business Lounge, it looked much better than other Priority Pass lounges at KUL, MNL, etc.

I checked in online, and was paged in the lounge for passport confirmation and to see my visa. They entered some numbers into the system too. I've transited multiple times through Vietnam and this is the first that I've seen an airline write down specific visa info. Having said that, I highly doubt that info is communicated to Vietnam; Cathay is probably just recording it in case someone arrives in Vietnam with an invalid visa.

Additional data point: Just changed my return flight JFK-HKG-HAN. The webpage was asking for 178 USD while over the phone I was only charged the 100 USD. Also managed to extend the layover in HAN to 22+ hours.. just to make sure I'll be able to collect my luggage. Safe travel to everyone.

Just finished a rather enjoyable week. I live in Phuket, so did a positioning flight to Da Nang and overnight there.
I was on 1700 Dragon flight to HKG, overnight in Regal Hotel, then onto JFK. Couple nights JFK, then back to HKG, one night and then one to Da Nang.
Booked separate ticket to Bangkok on return.
My fare was $855, with position flights and hotels, total $1400
Da Nang beautiful city and Hilton excellent. Immigration was fine with UK passport, bit of a wait but nothing major.
There is a transit area if You are hand luggage only, signposted, but not always people there, You need to call them to come.
If You are going on a different flight like me, immigration leaving Da Nang was awful at 1000-1300, took 30-40 minutes, when I left at 1600, no wait.
Both Dragon flights were very quiet, and noticed they blocked the seat next to me as Emerald One World.
JFK flights both went 5/6. One chap on way back was on fare, others seemed regular travellers. Great flights and crew, only no WiFi on either plane. Was interesting to see the routing they take, very different going to US v coming back.
JFK T8 arrival at 1230 was empty, no wait, I was surprised. Leaving again no wait, no priority, but when I approached the line, she saw 1st class and let me cut to front. Flagship dining was wonderful.
Went so quickly, and all a bit of a dream, but good fun.

I took the bus #86 for 35k from t2 to Long Bien, a 5-min walk from the edge of the old quarter. It had ac, a luggage space, a friendly conductor who spoke some English, even a WiFi, took about half an hour. I'm pretty sure I'm the only CX F pax who travels like this! There's even a cheaper option for 9k, but it seems it takes the double amounts of time. For those familiar with Grab, a car can be hired around 250k ($11) one way between the airport and the old quarter.

Have great flight back. Not sure about WiFi but I had 2 different planes and both no WiFi. Also on departures board at HKG. They show ones with WiFi and not so many. Glad you enjoyed Hilton as well
