CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Still no one has dropped the last leg?

I am considering dropping the last leg and flying out from HKG to my final destination BUT the second ticket is on Cathay dragon connecting to AA. So I am nervous about dropping the last leg to then connect on a few hours later to a Cathay dragon flight.

Same. I flew the outbound, and was calling CX to change my JFK-HKG-SGN...when doing a dummy booking on the CX website, First Standard (A) is available for my dates, and EF shows A availability, but the agents on the phone say there is no availability in A on any flights on my original date or in the days before.

Hang up and call again. This is allowed for $100 if CX has inventory, which may differ from what EF is showing. I've called CX about this on 3+ tickets (booked on Orbitz) and didn't have issue changing them to a different date.

The hard part is changing the original outbound Vietnam-NA flights, seems to be only around 5-10% success rate.

She offered a number of flights with $500 fee (including those with Qatar and JAL) but in ECONOMY!!!

I am tempted now to just change my booking online - USD700 and a downgrade to J.
Call CX and try different dates. This is allowed if there are inventory, which may differ from what EF is showing. Being polite to the agents also help.

This has been a constant problem. We had an IRROPS situation where our return to Vietnam got cancelled. When we tried to rebook because of work conflicts, the agents were at the desk speaking to the Vancouver Reservation agents and they continued saying it was never available to rebook in the class of service we had, no matter what date we gave them. This was very unfair, especially since it was IRROPS. We finally just gave up.

Has anyone found to be penalized for throwing away the last segment HKG-Vietnam?

That's a real bummer especially in the case of IRROPS...If the return got cancelled, did they not just put you on another flight? Or did you try to reschedule for another day entirely?

As another poster mentioned a few posts ago, it is really a Vietnam point-of-sale issue. I managed to change the outbound portion of an itinerary last night (so haven't flown the first segment yet), and had to do a bunch of dummy bookings on different days to find a day when first standard was available for an itinerary originating in Vietnam. Once I found that, I called up to make the change, and it was the standard 790 HKD fee to change. It does seem that in both directions, finding A inventory for itineraries specifically with a Vietnam point-of-sale is the issue.

I flew my outbound earlier and called trying to change my inbound. The agent was nice but said there wasn’t any availability in my fare class.

Im surprised you were able to change the outbound portion for the change fee only. I inquired about changing the return flight prior to commencing the trip. Customer service found dates for me, but wanted to reprice for 45k more. They indicated that the entire trip reprices if the outbound portion hasn't been flown yet, but the change fee comes into play if you want to change the return flight after you have flown the outbound portion. Crossing fingers I can change return flight in November, but it's not too big of a concern considering they honored the mistake.

Has anyone successfully gotten CX to fully refund an unused ticket booked in A class? It's almost impossible to rebook it

Sometimes plans change. This isn't meant to be a non-changeable ticket. In fact, fare rules say changes are allowed for $100.
If CX doesn't plan to honor these fare terms then I'm entitled to a full refund. Period. You can enjoy your gift. I will get my money back.

anyone able to build in a stopover at HKG too? i recall earlier posts of ppl able to add on stopover so the hkg to vietnam segment is a couple days later. can anyone still confirm if that is true? and if it costs any additional ($100?) thanks in advance!
