Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

No Amex for me. I have 1 x Visa Black & 1 x Visa Platinum.
Though I’ve hidden city ticketed and dropped flights off multi leg tickets a number of times I am aware that can take a number of actions that could, if they chose to enforce them, affect both my FF account and any future flights with the airline.
Anytime I’ve done it in the past (last time was in February) I’ve been sure to have a FF balance close to zero and no further flights booked with the particular airline.
I think most of the time people are way too scared of what *might* happen when they do such things. Unless you have a habit of doing this every week nothing is going to happen. Do you credit miles to CX or another program?

Anyone else in the same boat, or have tips/tricks or advice? City pairs to look for? Look for a RT ticket with biz on the way out and economy on the way back? AA had a HKG-MEX fare in I that was pretty great, but they've pulled it.

I think most of the time people are way too scared of what *might* happen when they do such things. Unless you have a habit of doing this every week nothing is going to happen. Do you credit miles to CX or another program?
As I have more than one round trip booked I have used multiple FF program to top up a few accounts including CX.

Sure no problem just present your Emerald card at the First Lounge when flying J. Otherwise there are no additional benefits in case of F travel.

Transit in HKG is the worst if there's even the slightest delay especially with Dragon Air. Remote stand, bus packed to brim then ONE door opened to let everybody out. Transit security has one of three gates open, thankfully some CX staff came by and took me through the crew lane or I'd have missed that YVR flight.
Interesting mix of people at the Hanoi lounge and when you listen to their conversations you get a good feel for how many folks booked these fares. Today there were at least three couples (two of which looked like bums) and one guy with expensive baggage, well dressed who talked to a friend on the phone about the fare and our delay (1 hour).

Ticket Change Via Orbitz Confirmed (Easy!)
Data point re Orbitz bookings:
Called them the morning after my arrival (today) to process a change of the return and was offered pretty much any date - ex SFO - as an even exchange plus the $100 change fee.
Paid, confirmed, done! Totally satisfied with the outcome.

Has anyone who booked through Orbitz/Expedia been able to change their dates and get a reprice based on historical fare? Tried multiple times and the agent told me that, even though the same fare buckets are available, the fare difference is $10k+.
