CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

A company makes a judgement call like this on a case by case basis, not because some people complained in the past (which in this case is entirely CX's fault).

Most of the previous damages you mentioned were caused by bloggers who published certain tricks in exchange for a bit of exposure. Not very smart but so be it. This game changes over time but to expect someone to move on cries of arrogance IMHO because a stranger doesn't owe me anything. Of course I concur in one area: One could always call the OTA or CX ahead of time and receive a full refund for the cancellation of this fare.
Funny, I haven't read of even one person giving up this deal and cancelling their tickets. People just want to ruin it for others.

- I didn't have any checked bags (who would?!)
- I online checked in and printed DAD-HKG boarding pass in HKG on the way to DAD
- I already had received multi-entry visa to Vietnam during a previous positioning trip

CX representative didn't offer any details, but she also didn't seem surprised.

Just FYI, YMMV
This is excellent news. Thank you for taking the time to share here in FT.

I have back to back tickets in June and haven't made any headway with making changes to them. So I'll be flying them as ticketed with the multientry visa I already obtained.

I wonder how CX knew you would be on the inbound flight? Perhaps they've had so many people do this that it's just now the daily procedure to check the inbound manifest for immediate turns? If the PNRs aren't linked in any way, I can't imagine this is automated.

This really makes me want to risk a same-plane turnaround in HAN next month. Would arrive at 9:25am from HKG and take the 10:25am (obviously the same plane). Would have an eVisa just in case. Worst that can happen? Have to clear immigration and then quickly check-in again?

There definitely have been. Those are the people who booked like 7-10 tickets when they only intended to consume 2-3, so naturally they're too ashamed to say they did that.

This. And there were also some who simply had stuff come up and contacted their OTA/Cathay for a full refund which was granted.

1100 bucks for F return is a phenomenal deal especially if based in Asia. Even as a one way! But of course there are many great rates from South East Asia to North America (such as RGN-LAX, HKG-CUN) and if date changes aren't possible then for some it might be better to just cancel and book a new ticket that suits their plans, even if it costs a bit more money.

Get your BP printed at HKG either at check-in or at a lounge, that way you don't need to check-in at HAN.

People reported being able to use transit for direct turn at HAN, but that''s technically illegal. There should be a business class immigration line at the left side of the hall (it definitely is at least a SkyPriority line). Then go upstairs, clear exit immigration, and clear security (there is a Business class line).

Might be tight if there are a ton of people, letting the crew know that you're turning around could be helpful.

AFAIK - and quite frankly as far as YOU know - NO ONE did this.

The far left lane is both Sky Priority and business class. (I don't believe it is labeled business class, but we showed our line checker our business class BP from CX Dragon and he said we were in the right immigration line.)

Outbound from HAN is as you stated... there is no priority lane for SP or business class, but there is one for security. (And that is where the lines tend to be longer.)

January 2020 would be more than one-year from the date of ticket issuance so the ticket would no longer be valid.

Any other way to have unique ffp number on each segment for future flight except at the gate?
On my last flight, I was able to change it per segment during the check-in process.

Tickets should be valid or one year from the date of the outbound flight, NOT the ticketing date.

As for transportation to the hotel, surely you and your 67 yo mum were going to be on a taxi / uber anyway? Uber might even be cheaper at 3:25 am.
I hope i saw your reply earlier! Turns out CX took my hotel details and ordered a transportation for us, alongside with another PEY customer... The car went to that customer's place first so we ended up arriving 30 min later than if we went directly from airport... i wished i had asked for the uber reimbursement option...

Not sure the question has been asked, but couldn't find it with a quick search.

My return flight arrives HKG at 6am, and connect to HAN at 6pm (using my AA FF). If I use avios to booking a KA flight to somewhere else at 12 (stick with BA FF), will that be a problem, say, at check in or boarding with the KA flight? And also, I assume I can just show them my AA EXP card on the phone to access the lounge while no switching my booking to AA, right?

Nope. One year from date of issuance.

TRAVEL FROM LAST INTERNATIONAL STOPOVER MUST COMMENCE NO LATER THAN 12 MONTHS AFTER DEPARTURE FROM FARE ORIGIN.

So it is allowed to change flight segments to dates up to 12 months after the first segment is flown well into 2020 for many of us. Finding the approprite fare class to make changes is the main issue.

I have some C tickets, so the availability is wide open on any date. If I am to change to a date within a year of the ticket issuance everything is fine; but if anything beyond it, at the final confirmation stage, I got this error: "We are unable to find a fare for your chosen itinerary. Please select different flights and search again."
