Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Quick update about changing: Changed a second time on a return leg NYC-DAD on F, ticketed on CX website, called agent in HK and she was able to find me 2 dates in June. Also asked her to search for Jan 2020, no luck. I suspect whatever rare slots available are other people’s abandoned segments

What does that have to do with anything? The fare has certain rules including the option to change the return flight. Should people be ok with throwing away their return just because CX decided to to cancel it from the get go?

Flyertalk has a handful of individuals who between them have done irreparable damage for the rest of us seeking to enjoy (use) mistake fares. This seems no different.
SWISS, UA, cabotage issues from GUM via Japan.
CX is one of the few airlines that said they’d carry us, and yet people still want to complain because they decide they have a better offer come up and don’t want to fly the dates they originally booked.
What’s the alternative? That CX doesn’t honour them in future because it’s all too much trouble. Is that what people ultimately want by going to the DOT?
So what if some people were lucky enough to change? If others can’t, move on. Don’t ruin it for the rest of us.

If anyone still cares, I just successfully did same day turnaround at DAD.
CX staff met me at the bridge (I didn't request it), walked to security at transfer counter, and then took me to departure gate. Whole thing took 13 mins.
- I didn't have any checked bags (who would?!)
- I online checked in and printed DAD-HKG boarding pass in HKG on the way to DAD
- I already had received multi-entry visa to Vietnam during a previous positioning trip
CX representative didn't offer any details, but she also didn't seem surprised.
Just FYI, YMMV

I am unable to make any headway with the call center to change the dates on one of my tickets - has anyone had any luck with just going over the Cathay desks in LAX and dealing with the agents directly?

What’s the alternative? That CX doesn’t honour them in future because it’s all too much trouble. Is that what people ultimately want by going to the DOT?
So what if some people were lucky enough to change? If others can’t, move on. Don’t ruin it for the rest of us.
A company makes a judgement call like this on a case by case basis, not because some people complained in the past (which in this case is entirely CX's fault).
Most of the previous damages you mentioned were caused by bloggers who published certain tricks in exchange for a bit of exposure. Not very smart but so be it. This game changes over time but to expect someone to move on cries of arrogance IMHO because a stranger doesn't owe me anything. Of course I concur in one area: One could always call the OTA or CX ahead of time and receive a full refund for the cancellation of this fare.

I don't expect anyone to 'move on' and lose money just because CX didn't cancel my fare. Why should they? If that's your position and money doesn't matter to you then you can just as well reimburse the affected individuals personally - send them a check!

To say "just fly what you booked" is a very simplistic view of life. Things happen and tons of tickets get changed every day. I have previously said (even in this thread) that one shouldn't book a ticket if he doesn't intend of flying it but a change per fare rules and being willing to pay the respective fee is a fair expectation IMHO.

Very simple: If something requires you to change the return flight and you can't then you lose the segment and have to book something else which costs additional money.
To say "just fly what you booked" is a very simplistic view of life. Things happen and tons of tickets get changed every day. I have previously said (even in this thread) that one shouldn't book a ticket if he doesn't intend of flying it but a change per fare rules and being willing to pay the respective fee is a fair expectation IMHO.

If you are a resident of Viêt Nam or Asia, using one of these fares to visit the states, travel insurance will cover you for the flight home if the matter is so urgent it prevents you from flying.
I can’t see any losses here.

Flies in the face of the official 'no direct turns' edict. Maybe Vietnam has realized... who cares?!

Vietnam officials did not say no direct turn, what they said no direct turn without going through immigration.
[correction] read again, I interpreted the event wrongly.
