Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Are you on the afternoon BKK-HAN VN flight? We debated that and the earlier one... opted for the earlier flight. We were too afraid of a missed connection and losing the flight and fare. So we have been option for the loooooong layover in HAN. It is not too bad. If you have PP, you can try that lounge in HAN. We liked it better and just hung there vs. going to the 'closer' lounge.

I'm interested in this as well. On the return to Hanoi, I have a long layover in HKG before boarding the CX-coded Vietnam Airlines-operated business class flight. I didn't realize that I might not get CX lounge access until recently. I will probably give it a shot at all of their lounges.

We were coming off our domestic connection and the earlier JFK-HKG flight had just closed up. (The one that stops in YVR.) If your tickets include the VN codeshare you cannot print bp's at home. Rather than deal with a potential hassle at the FL, we went to the gate of the earlier JFK-YVR-HKG flight. We got lucky - it was next to our arrival gate. We casually asked the agent if there was room in business on the earlier Dragon flight. Her response 'sure, no problem'. Minutes later we were walking away with all bp's and lounge invites for HKG.

I was theoretically able to get my flight date switched, but in a very very roundabout manner. The Stopover method described above sadly didn't work for me, but oh well. Still hasn't ticketed yet so I don't want to claim it "worked" yet, but if anyone needs help in the interim please PM me. Woo!

Anyway a DOT complaint is nothing more than an intimidation tactic. The likelihood that the DOT is taking any enforcement action is pretty much zilch, however airlines don't like to be on their radar/monthly report and are often much more flexible when a complaint is filed. Let's not forget the max that the agency can do is fine the carrier. They can't force them to actually reinstate/change a ticket or provide a customer service solution.

It is CX 846, originally scheduled at 18:45, then at 18:11 rescheduled to 19:10, then at 19:48, after the rescheduled time, reschedule to 00:00. I may be a bit greedy here, but are my 67 yr old mum and myself deserve some sort of compensation? At least... I hope they'll be covering the transportation to my hotel since we now arrive at 3:25 am instead of 10:45pm?

Yes if on time, or even a little late. Print your BP in Thailand... Business class security is on the far left... work your way past the crowd. No waiting. 10-20 minutes from deplaning you can be airside.
Are you on the afternoon BKK-HAN VN flight? We debated that and the earlier one... opted for the earlier flight. We were too afraid of a missed connection and losing the flight and fare. So we have been option for the loooooong layover in HAN. It is not too bad. If you have PP, you can try that lounge in HAN. We liked it better and just hung there vs. going to the 'closer' lounge.

even this airline has many delays it should be enough space .

Be aware that Vietjet not only runs late, but they also cancel flights without much notice. The last minute - or delay then cancel, cancelations - greatly limits your options to get to HAN.
We have done the BKK-HAN that lands at 1:55 in HAN. Yes it is a long layover, but it is piece of mind to be there. It winds up being a little less than 5 hours in the lounge.
If you go for the early flight, you could also head into Hanoi for a meal and sightseeing, if you were so inclined.

There are two.
Choice 1 - ACV/NIA Business Lounge. When you clear transit security, you turn left and go upstairs. They will tell you to come back later because you only have 3 hours to stay in the lounge. You can just say you want your three hours to start now and stay. (We were never asked to leave.) It is very crowded until the ANA flight leaves. Then it is empty. There will be sauce and spaghetti and a few other mains, along with cold cuts. 3 local beers and a few others and an open bar. Lots of seating, few outlets.
Choice 2 - Song Hong Business Lounge. When you clear transit security, you turn right and walk down several gates. It is next to the Vietnam Airlines Lotus Lounge. We use PP to go to this one. (PP says 3 hours but no one even mentioned it.) Food/drink is about the same, but the seating is nicer and there are more outlets. The internet can get spotty as the lounge gets fuller. Last time we just hung there and did a longer walk to the plane.
