Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Has anyone recently been able to change the second leg after flying the first leg? About to fly my first leg (HAN-HKG) and was wondering if I would have any luck changing my "return" YVR-HKG date (quite literally to any other date in 2019..) while hanging out at the first class lounge in HKG. I saw some reports but they are a little older at this point and I understand the situation is fluid. Booked through CX website, showing as in A class.

We did this. We took the "only" date available and moved our return flight from SFO-HKG-HAN from April to July. The agent changed our connecting flight from VA to cathay dragon as well. Good luck. We called the US CSR line for CX to do so. Paid $100 each for change fees plus some sort of other taxes of about 60$.

How did you manage to find the available date? I'm also looking to change dates for my return SFO-HKG-HAN leg but since the fare class availability for changes doesn't match what you can find searching on ExpertFlyer or Cathay's site for a new booking, I can't figure out how to find available dates (if there any). Thanks in advance

Unfortunately, I think the only answer is YMMV. I was able to switch from the VN code share to the earlier Dragon flight with a gate agent with no problem. This after being told on the phone no way. Others have reported making the change with front line agents at the airport, with others being told no. I know it is not what you guys want to hear, but my belief is it will be this way for the rest of the year - some people will get lucky, some will not.
Not sure what you are looking for... by the rules, no admit, unless CX Elite FF. In practice, we have one person who got turned away at one lounge and got in on another. I think you take your shot and hope for the best. Good luck!
Not sure what you are looking for... by the rules, no admit, unless CX Elite FF. In practice, we have one person who got turned away at one lounge and got in on another. I think you take your shot and hope for the best. Good luck!

I booked in business D class via an OTA (Orbitz). If I see business D class inventory on alternate dates on Expertflyer / Matrix / Cathay should I theoretically be able to just pay my $100 change fee / $0 fare difference and change my flight to the new dates?
I know that CX is playing games with A class inventory making it hard to make flight changes - is dealing with D class changes similarly problematic? My OTA isn't showing any D class inventory at all when I try to make changes online, but I can find D class inventory on their site using the regular OTA flight search.

I'm going to be in HKG over the weekend so might drop by the ticketing desk and see if they can help me identify suitable inventory, then I'll call Expedia while I'm there and see about a change. I've spent countless hours on the phone with Expedia agents, some good but most clueless, concerning these fares. Sooner or later I'll make some headway. This is fun game.
PS: My issue is back-to-back DAD-JFK-DAD,DAD-JFK-DAD tickets. Those were booked before I learned about the problems with an immediate turn at DAD.

I have had an update from the airport at Da Dang, transfer through the international terminal (2) is allowed. There is a section on website and map. Note this is only for international to international transfer, if you connect to domestic you need to exit

I believe so, I got a visa from the government site direct for transit, just to be safe, and it was mentioned you should be going onto a 3rd country not back to back, or even same country, is come from Bangkok and go to Phuket, not allowed.

5 hr 15 min delay
I'm currently "stuck" in Pier first waiting for my flight. (BTW it's pretty full today since they have quite a lot delays today, no day suite available, no massage available, even dining room needs to wait for the table)
It is CX 846, originally scheduled at 18:45, then at 18:11 rescheduled to 19:10, then at 19:48, after the rescheduled time, reschedule to 00:00. I may be a bit greedy here, but are my 67 yr old mum and myself deserve some sort of compensation? At least... I hope they'll be covering the transportation to my hotel since we now arrive at 3:25 am instead of 10:45pm?

Just to update.. while at the F lounges in HKG, I tried to get my flight date changed for the return legs of my flight. There is availability showing on the website as bookable, yet the agents claimed it was all completely booked. Not sure how to mitigate that - going to call. Debating if I should volunteer being downgraded to Biz in order to get dates moved.
