Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

If you plan to leave the airport, I would select tourism. If you do not plan to leave the airport, I would select transit.

Adding to all of the datapoints around flight changes - I called the CX HK call center to change the date of my flight. I fed the rep a few dates and quickly received a 'sorry, the flights are all full for that date' response. She claimed that there was zero availability for the entire month. I have not yet flown the outbound leg from Vietnam.
Interestingly, I asked her to confirm the cancellation fee for the ticket, and after a brief hold, she mentioned that the $300 fee would be waived completely in this case. Looks like they are more than happy to cancel these tickets

Do we have good tourist site or guides information if we need to book like Day city tour. I will be visiting HAN for 2 day in April and wanted to check for tour options. And also do we have any information about the place to visit (suggestions) while in Vietnam in this thread or different thread.

Just wanted to share that I called in and managed to add a stopover in HKG to my ticket (DAD-JFK-DAD in F) on in the inbound for ~75USD (100USD change fee with a refund of about 25USD in taxes). I have yet to fly the outbound and ticket was booked with CX directly. No mention of repricing.

Morning. I wonder if anyone can help with a visa questions. I am flying into Da Nang on UK passport, I understand UK get 15 days visa free, just staying one day so seems fine. WhenI return I am flying in from Hong Kong and then 3 hours later to Phuket, so would be transit, hand luggage only. I emailed the Embassy in London, they just replied saying I need multi entry tourist visa, Ł114! Seems steep to me, not sure it is real embassy site. Does anyone have any experience with visas for UK citizen? Many Thanks!

For this trio, assuming you need a visa, it would be a single entry visa - I believe about $25 - for the one day stay. On the return, you do not need a visa as you are staying in transit. To keep it simple for yourself, I would print out your complete connecting flight information. Ideally, you print your bp for your connecting flight and just head to transit security.

It seems to me you need a multiple entry, because you are flying to Danang to take your CX flight, then given it is a round-trip you would be returning to Danang. There isn't really a just transit in Danang. I don't know if you meant you would fly to Hong Kong and then from there to Danang, because you would still need a visa for the supposed entry to Vietnam because that's what your ticket shows, and they wouldn't let you board otherwise.
(I don't know about situation for countries which have visa-free, whether you can stack it or there is a waiting period. If you didn't have visa-free I would do 2 evisas versus one multiple entry
