Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Just landed in JFK. Flight in 1st was 5/6. Business was probably 40% full. They fed us so we’ll and the Pier J wow. Looking forward to the return then hopefully having enough miles and can find availability back in F to the US in November.

Historical pricing seems to be concept orbitz just cant deal with. I'm escalated to a supervisor here in the US that at one point claimed she didnt have access to the fare rules. I asked for that quoted in an email and now they're researching now... seems helpdesk is their code word for GDS fluent people.
update: she offered coach on the new outbound dates that show A availability. And we get to keep the original inbound. Some progress I guess.
update 2: so I re-read the fare rules. "no stopover in HK on the outbound" was my hiccup. thought this was unlimited stopovers. I asked for a reroute through LAX (home) on the inbound, tons of A availabilty, I heard an audible gulp from the agent on that request. Back at it....
update: she offered coach on the new outbound dates that show A availability. And we get to keep the original inbound. Some progress I guess.

Hello everyone! I read through, but didn't find enough information about lounge access for those who fly from Hanoi. When I fly to JFK I only have 2.5 hours transit time - surely not enough to enjoy the lounges. But on my way back I do have 7+ hours. But connecting to codeshare on VN is still unclear about access policy. Many people have flown this already but only one person reported that he was allowed into the lounge, but not allowed into a second one. Can more people report about this?
Also, if it's NOT allowed in the end, how can I still get there? Is it safe to book same-day one-way ticket from HKG to somewhere? If so, should I avoid CX, or also need to avoid Cathay Dragon? What can you advice? I really want to get into this lounge on my return flight and need to consider all options possible.

But connecting to codeshare on VN is still unclear about access policy. Many people have flown this already but only one person reported that he was allowed into the lounge, but not allowed into a second one. Can more people report about this?
Also, if it's NOT allowed in the end, how can I still get there? Is it safe to book same-day one-way ticket from HKG to somewhere? If so, should I avoid CX, or also need to avoid Cathay Dragon? What can you advice? I really want to get into this lounge on my return flight and need to consider all options possible.

- By the official rules no, we do not have access when connecting to a CX codeshare, unless, you are a Silver elite or above with the CX MPC (Marco Polo Club). You can read more here.
- Yes, there is one report above of someone who got in. I can see how it is possible... Show up with your F/C bp. Show your connecting bp that says CX1234. I can see agent saying "welcome". (If we get in, we will 100% not try to hop to another lounge. If we get denied, we will try the other FC lounge.)
- If you buy a ticket on another OW partner (or CX if you want to risk it), you would have access. However, I would think once they scan your inbound BP, it would show the CX codeshare on VN. And you would show them a different bp. Not sure how that would work out.
- If we get denied at both, we will do some lounge hoping... go to a PP lounge or two... then go to the SkyTeam lounge, which doesn't look too bad. Look here.
- We will continue to try and move to the earlier Dragon Flight. No luck so far. (Moving to an earlier flight gives us the opportunity to fly back out of HAN to our final destination in Vietnam same day.)
- Most important is to do everything on the down low. Don't make a scene. You can always try the lounges a few hours later and see if you get a different agent with a different POV.
If anyone else has used the FC lounge in HKG, connecting to a non-OW CX codeshare, please share your experiences.

There was $100 change fee. The base fare seems to be the same but the surcharge was cheaper than what I paid before. So net net I only paid $47. I still can't believe that. The nice thing about CX's webstie is you can search plus and minus three days when making change and you can see exactly which dates you need to reprice to +$20K and which ones you can change for the cheap.
Any suggestions?
Edited to add: I took the plunge and called CX. The agent could not have been nicer and looked through several available weeks (for me) to check the fares. He was able to find the A fare - ticket changed for $100 change fee. I was upfront with him about this being a mistake fare on the part of CX and how wonderful they were to even honor it in the first place. Also told him there was no way I could pay the $$$ upfare cost if it changed to that.

This may be useful to anyone who booked through an OTA. I used Orbitz at the very last minute to get in on the A fare. Over the last few days Ive been basically listening to Orbitz radio on hold for hours. From what Ive learned the frontline CS has no option to use historical pricing. They also do not see what expertflyer or ITA matrix will offer. Youre stuck with what they offer on their system. After so many damn permutations of the booking, litterally comic suggestions over many hours on speakerphone playing fortnite or reading the news, I settled on a last minute downgrade to D class on all segments for much better dates on both outbound and inbound. The 32k change quote was reduced to an added cost of what would be the cancellation fee. As yet the receipt still shows the original fare, which would fall in line with the fare rules that the charge must be same cost or higher but I expect the added fees to hit soon. As someone whose flown many error fares in the past, yes I regret not using Amex, chase or the airline directly. Good luck to anyone in our situation and I hope your mobile plan is set on unlimited. And to quote Airplane, I picked a bad week to quit sniffing glue, constantly checking hanoi time is not fun. I mean very last minute change.

What’s the latest on the HAN transfer desk? If I fly in on an LCC from Thailand (with an eVisa as I know LCCs require visas even if transiting), can I stay airside or do I have to clear immigration? Aka is the KA transfer desk staffed? It would be in the morning around 8-9am.

I am not sure about the desk, however, you should have no problem printing your bp's before you leave Thailand. Assuming you have these, just head straight to transit security. (Once you go down the escalator, turn left, and then another hard left, before the transit desks.)
