CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Same posted for return JFK-HKG
I have the same posting for AS on flights going HKG-JFK and HKG-YVR-JFK. They refused to add the additional miles (total 8841) for YVR saying that because I wasn't issued a separate boarding pass, it counts as one flight. Anyone experience this issue and know if AS will correct it?

You need a bit of luck with a good Expedia agent who knows what they are doing, first reached two different clueless ones, politely hang up and called again, finally a very competent agent was able to very quickly find the J and A class inventory and made the change for me.

Kuods to CX, don't know where that story of having A class blocked only for new bookings comes from but obviously i was still able to make changes without re-pricing just 2 days ago so A class is definitely available for rebooking as well.
Would you mind sharing what were your new travel dates? I'm not sure why your agent was able to do it but the three different agents I spoke to said the A class shows "AL" (locked) availability for changes whereas it's available for new bookings.

Can somebody confirm that if we fly the first leg or after (Vietnam to US leg) then we can change the return flight (US to Vietnam route) to later date based on Available in A class fare without repricing (using the old price) ? What will be the change fee in this case ? Did anybody had success with this process ? Can this be done online or we call the agent (as the US wait time is like 20 -30 min.

I've done this for a past CX itinerary, but not for this deal. The change fee will be $100 per passenger still. You can either walk up to the Cathay service desk at the airport or call them on the phone to get it done. I haven't done it online, not sure if you can do it.

Update: I called Orbitz today and they could find the availability in A that I saw on GDS. But they can't find the J class availability for the HKG-HAN flight, which I can see on GDS. So, I went ahead and booked the new date I liked for the A class, a stopover and flying to HAN the next day. After all, the A class availability was key, and a stopover in HKG is fun anyway!

anytime the flight number is the same it's only considered a stop, the JFK-YVR-HKG is just a quick stop to pick up more passengers (it is still the same plane), you aren't let off the flight unless you force a stopover yourself in YVR. until that happens, it's always going to be counted the same as JFK-HKG direct unfortunately.

Same posted for return JFK-HKG
May I confirm please: (a) you earned 72k redeemable miles total for the HKG-JFK-HKG flights and (b) these two flights alone earned you MVP Gold?

Well I've embraced my booking and wont be changing, though considering a dropped leg. I figure why not use this as a chance to take in a bunch of flights i've always wanted to do and go all in on the experience.

So this has become my first mileage run / endurance travel now running as a combination of redemptions and paid flights as well to be: JFK-ORD-NRT-HAN-HKG-BOS-HKG-SIN-DOH-LHR-JFK with F on JAL, BA and Singapore Air, Q-Suites on Qatar. I get to go back to do the HKG lounges i've not done before, Singapore Private Room, a short jaunt in the new look Concorde lounge too. I'll be searching out survival tips for sleep as this is a Thursday to Tuesday run for me. I suspect the volume of caviar and krug will help lull me asleep.

HKG-JFK-HKG Should earn 24,202 EQM and 72,604 RDM with MVP Gold status. That gets you almost to MVP (25,000 miles), and nearly half way to MVP Gold (50,000 miles).

Oh. So Governator was MVP to start with, not as a result of these two flights.

My understanding of MVP qualification, however is that it is bum-in-seats miles or redeemable miles:

"Alaska’s mid-tier status requires you to earn [as opposed to "fly"] 50,000 elite-qualifying miles on Alaska and its airline partners (40,000 if flown entirely on Alaska) or complete 60 elite-qualifying segments during the calendar year" [emphasis added] (https://thepointsguy.com/guide/earni...-elite-status/).

So a HKG-JFK-HKG would earn 56k EQMs which is enough for MVP Gold. Have I read that incorrectly?

The Cathay First seats make a really large bed that is among the most comfortable I have been in for sleeping.

It seems I have read it wrong:

"These tickets earn great redeemable miles. From an elite-qualification standpoint, one first class round-trip won’t even earn you MVP status though" (https://thepointsguy.com/guides/cath...-need-to-know/).

Yep, you only earn 150% EQM (~24k for round trip) no matter your status, and 350% RDM as a general member. With Elite bonuses you earn 400%, 450%, or 475% RDM (MVP, Gold, 75k respectively).

In my experience that CX flight with the technical stop in Canada only ever counted as HKG-JFK for me. Though I did HKG-YYZ-JFK.

I asked them once casually and was told that technical stops don't count. Just like an emergency diversion to XYZ wouldn't count as an extra segment. I was shown some T&C where it was said that mileage calculation doesn't need to follow great circle mapping and CX at their sole discretion will determine mileage credited regardless of actual miles flown.

Many other programs have similar verbiage in the fine print. Bottom line you probably wont succeed in getting credit for an extra segment if it was a technical stop not reflected in your boarding passes.

Is it wide enough to have a toddler next to you trying to fall asleep?
