[PREM FARE GONE] Philippine Airlines, LHR-HKG, £500 J return

Top tips for the "Dim Sum / Chicken adobo" fare:
  • At more than 5 weeks after most of us booked this fare it looks increasingly likely that the fare will stick. However prudence is still advisable and we should all avoid contacting the booking agent and if essential to contact try to deal with the airline direct.
  • Check that your original itenary is intact and ticketed as PAL revised their LHR flight schedule in early September and there appear to now only be 5 flights a week now rather than daily. Use TripCase to do this - see post #114 on how to do this (thanks to @MyFlights App). If you have incurred an involuntary change you can contact PAL and they will permit one change to amend your itenary. They appear to be flexible to shift flights to adjacent days, but if you try to push to be rerouted on another carrier to maintain the original itenary times you might find your flights are cancelled and you end up with a refund.
  • Online seat assignments are not possible on PAL when booked through a 3rd party, you have to call up, it is best to call PAL on 0808 164 9888 rather than the booking agent.
  • Whilst it looks like the fare is going to stick be aware that making other travel arrangements around this booking are at your own risk so consider making bookings that are refundable or covered by insurance if needed.
In hopes that this will go ahead, here's a wiki to see who's going and when.

Don’t eat in the MNL lounge. I saw a member of staff at the urinal, not wash his hands and go back out to prepare food.

Just thought I'd post this as I'm on my return leg.

HKG: I couldn't check in online. Arrived 5:45 am - PAL check in desks are located in Terminal 2. Check in was fine but the departures section in T2 doesn't open until 6:30 am, which means having to go back to Terminal 1 to go through security and immigration. PAL uses the Hong Kong Airlines lounge which is really nothing to write home about. Minimal selection of food (congee, salad, pastries, eggs made to order) and limited drinks. However it is very quiet so a relaxed space to spend some time pre-flight.

HKG to MNL: you're taken to the aeroplane by a transfer bus. Excellent flight. 8 pax in business class. Staff were friendly and professional. As there are no IFE screens, you're given an iPad to watch things. Limited selection of films and TV shows, but easy to pass the time on a short flight. Food was good (I'd ordered a special vegetarian meal) although nowhere near Qatar's excellent choice and variety which I love.

Once you've disembarked, you go down the escalators, go to the transfer desk where your boarding pass is stamped, go through a small security gate again and then head upstairs to where the departure gates are. The Mabuhay Lounge is located near Gate 8.

It's an ok, passable lounge - simple, efficient but drab in colour and style, and nothing to be wowed by... Hot food, fruit, cakes, desserts. Different selection of drinks. I'd recommend having a Tanduay and coke - it's Philippines' national rum which I discovered many years ago when I first travelled to the country. Very smooth.

Currently in the Mabhuay lounge. If anyone is around, let me know and I'll come to say hello. I'm the guy with the blue hat. I'll also be seated in 5A on the LHR flight.

Cheers

DSF - did they credit you the entitled miles (ie 125%)?

I also credited mine to EY and it was a sh*t fight. First took months and two emails to just get them credited. Now they've finally been credited (I travelled in JAN) but at only 100%.

I was in 3K. Did you see the FT tag on my carry-on?

LHR-MNL was fine. The crew did a good job with quick dinner service, I then slept for 8 hrs and woke up almost in MNL. I was supposed to spend 24 hrs in MNL but managed to get on an earlier flight. If you show up for an earlier flight, they'll put you on it. You can't confirm it in advance. They only had Y available at the check-in counter, so I had to sign a waiver saying, I won't hold it against them, but for a 2 hr flight to HKG, I thought it was worth it. I re-upgraded later when I was at the lounge.

They seem to run 1-2 widebodies on MNL-HKG-MNL (consisting of 359 and 773) in addition to regular narrow-body planes.

on MNL-LHR service was mediocre by the FA that was serving me. When she went on break, the other FA was great. I'm not a very difficult customer to please, but when glasses are left empty and I'm not asked if I would like something else - that's just bad manners for the service industry. In my 3 flights, this one FA was the exception rather than the norm though.

Hard product on the 359 is awesome and comfy. If you're taking the window seats, do get the one that's next to the window (rows 3, 5, 7, ...), not next to the aisle (rows 2, 4, 6,...) as you'll have a wider seat for sleeping, due to the curvature of the plane, because the armrest goes down.

Overall, I'd say this fare was worth the ££ paid.

Speaking of MNL, any idea what this plane is still doing there - why haven't they removed it? If you're staying in MNL, stay in Makati or BGC, not in Intramuros. Download and use Grab (Asian equivalent to Uber) - works great. Traffic is horrendous though.

100%. not got anything for the return sectors and can't be bothered chasing for any more, I'd actually given up hope so these are a bonus for me.

We're flying out of LHR tomorrow evening. I'll arrive at T5 - I guess online checkin won't be possible? Is there a transfer desk at LHR I can use or do I have to go landside first?

Online checkin worked for me, but the self printed BP scanning didn't work at the transit in LHR. So, had to go to the transfer desk for a new BP (by the way there is even a Philippine Airlines counter there). nb: went from terminal 2 to 3 (or the other way around - can't recall)!

Thus, didn't need to go landside.

Thanks, that sounds great! OLCI worked for me now as well... but I was never prompted about my frequent flier number?! Hope I'll be able to add it at the transfer desk in the lounge tomorrow.

Just tell them your EY number when you check in ore Just go to the Etihad site and log in and claim your missing miles.

I checked in online and I’d prefer to avoid retro-claiming the miles, especially after the reports in this thread of the process taking several months.
I’ll just try to get the number added at the transfer desk or gate.
