Has anyone tried to do the status match? Do you accumulate at the J class rate or do we get less?

Yes. I did the status challenge and earned gold. The LAX- HKG flight was enough to satisfy the requirement.

My LAX-HKG-BKK outbound earned at the regular J rate. On my return I earned the J rate plus the 50% gold bonus.

Wanted to tip the cap to fullcollapseca - can add a data point/some additional information to his earlier comments regarding the possible adjustments for those who were downgraded on HKG-SGN // SGN-HKG legs.
  • Expedia had emailed HX for information on the downgrade changes HKG-SGN and SGN-HKG in my case.
  • First rep contacted me and told me that she could move my outbound HKG-SGN leg up one day, and that would be in J. I was pretty sure that was not the case (later verified), so I ended the call to 'consider'.
  • Second rep (who I contacted using Expedia's 'call me' feature, in case it matters) let me know that there was no J class available between HKG-SGN for 10 days in either direction. He also let me know that HX had provided a code that would allow him to move our inbound and/or my outbound flights for 14 days in either direction, but that we could only make these adjustment(s) without charge at one time. A side key item, our scheduled flight to SGN was in the first half of January - with the provided code, we were able to move our departing flights into December, also arriving in December. This might be of interest to a few in similar circumstances (or in early December, to move later).
  • I inquired with the Expedia rep. if we would be able to re-book in extra legroom seats for the HKG-SGN legs. He called HX and was told that he would have to send another email to HX with this request. I ultimately chose not to wait for those emails (it took several days to get the free change code/permission previously, and there was no guarantee that HK would agree to provide the extra legroom seats) and made the outbound flight adjustments while keeping the HKG-SGN legs in K.
  • The rep would have had no problem adjusting our return flights within a 14 day timeframe as well, but we chose to leave those as they were.
  • The Expedia rep did not know the answer to the lounge access question (when departing in downgraded K), but wouldn't really expect him to. He did say that the baggage should be honored as J, for those that were wondering (this is with a grain of salt, of course)
Hope this is helpful to a few.

Did not change my HKG-SGN leg that was downgraded from Business to Economy, not a date change.
Expedia was given similar options as stated above for those affected by the class change. They had to call in to Hong Kong Airlines to get the approval code to enter in their system to make the change that I requested.

If one of your segments had a date, time, or class change, I'm fairly certain you can push for a date change within reason.

To answer the question if you're still able to access the lounge after being downgraded to economy: no.

I just tried to get into the lounge and they had to call ticketing . The ticket office said the fare was not valid for lounge access. But they did say contact whoever you bought tickets from to see if they will reimburse you for the downgrade

Has anyone requested a refund because of a schedule change? I have a December LAX-HKG-BKK round trip that now has a change on the return BKK-HKG leg that will cause me to miss my connection. I tried requesting a refund online with no luck.

Thanks

Mystified - Safe travels, and interesting info, thanks for sharing. Did you receive/try showing them the email that came directly from Hong Kong Air announcing that you had been downgraded due to the equipment (schedule) change? (text below) Just curious if that plus the incoming J receipt/email confirmation might be convincing.

I booked through Expedia. Can I try to make changes directly with the airlines or do I need to follow conventional wisdom which is to go through Expedia?

Probably depends on what sort of change you want to make. Changing a seat? Probably directly with HK. Changing a flight date/schedule changes? Probably Expedia, since they acted as your travel booker.

That sucks. I’m happy that I can take advantage of this, it will give me access to VA’s domestic lounges +1guest and enough points for 3 one way trips OOL-SYD

It might, it might not. HX hasn't been terribly good about crediting these flights to Fortune Wings Club accounts -- even after asking for missing credits via their web form.

Voluntary change

Anyone tried to change the date of the return flight? I know they will not allow routing changes for return but should be possible to change the date with the $200 penalty. Any success stories?

The other problem is that it is almost impossible to get hold of them.

If you are able to change your return please let me know. I am currently in Bangkok and would like to extend it a couple days but my impression is that it's not possible.
