Is that the HX069 LAX-HKG 3/2/19 flight at 10:45am? I'm on that one, maybe we'll see each other.

Flight timing
I fly LAX-BKK on nov 1. I am positioning from ATL and just wondering if it is better to fly in the night before. Flight is at 11.45am but for the past few days they have been 20-45mins late. Earliest flight from ATL arrives at 9am via AA. Will we be safe to fly in on 1st or is that pushing it? Not sure if 2hrs 45mins is enough time

I flew from Vegas on a 7am flight and ran from a different terminal to TBIT check in, which opens 3hrs before the flight. Online boarding passes were NOT available for US or Canadian residents, and HX does not participate in TSA Pre. The LAX International lounge was surprisngly well stocked with food and beverage. (and this is coming from someone who flies out of LAX to visit 5-7 lounges at a time!)

If your ticket is on a other airline ticket (obvious in this case) , 2hr 45min is enough time... unless it isn't. If your AA plane goes mechanical, HX is not going to reaccomodate you the next day.

We are in a similar situation as you. (We too are flying from the East Coast.) Not worth the risk of a misconnect with no protections, especially on a "super discounted fare". So, we decided to fly the night before and stay by the airport. Gives us plenty of backup flights if something goes wrong. Get a good night's sleep in LA and then head over to LAX and deal with long security at TBIT.

We are positioning the night before as well.
Speaking of long lines at TBIT - it should be possible to walk over to T4 and use a premier line there, right? Not sure it's worth it - I haven't had to clear TBIT security in a while - but it may be a quicker option.

I went through TBIT 2 weeks ago. There is a business class ID check line - from there the security wait was less than 10 minutes. This was for a 1am flight, with a heavy volume of Asia flights heading out. Not sure what it looks like mid-morning.

well, I personally love risks, and booked AA's YVR-LAX arriving 9:30-ish for the 12:10 noon HX flight next month, this flight is consistently on time due to the bird sitting on the ground for the night at YVR, so I am not that worried. Not checking luggage also makes it a safe bet I believe. Hey but each person can take risks differently, and I am the type that position via HKG to SGN for the pho fare with just 2 hours to spare with CX and their typhoon-prone routes just to avoid paying for visa!

Seems like a safe, good bet. I'm also positioning for LAX-HKG (actually through to BKK) and doing the same / coming in the day before just incase. Was too paranoid something'd happen and we'd be screwed.

I didn't see the fare rules, but am trying to figure out what my options are given that I have confirmed tickets for my 18 month old (booked through Expedia) for travel this Dec and turns out HX doesn't allow anyone under 2 to fly in business class. So I was thinking maybe they'll let me change the travel to March when my child will turn 2 and be allowed to fly in business class.
Seems like my only other option is to just cancel the tickets, which I don't want to do.

we saw our SHA-PVG Sunday (as well as all flights and all carriers to HKG Sunday) was cancelled.
Asked at HKG E1 connection desk if we could reaccomodate or change... useless
Asked at HKG ticketing desk when we arrived Sat AM... useless (they told us they had "already" reaccomodated us.. by deleting the cancelled segmemt leaving it as an open jaw, and said it was up to us to take a train pvg-hkg)
Called HX from our PVH hotel Sat.. disconnected after 2hr hold.
Tried online chat, went from position 188 to 160 in 2hrs time, then session disconnected.
Called HX a few hours later, connected in 45 minutes.
Asked how long our tickets were valid for if we postponed trip. Agent said until Sept 19th.
Asked if supervisor could check real validity date saying we thought it might be good for longer. She asked how much longer and I said I don't know maybe 6 months. Agent replied yes, six months OK.
I asked for real date, and after long hold "all travel must be complete by April 19 2019". Made no sense where they came up with that date. I was also worried that the official typhoon update on carrier website says within 14 days of original travel.
While debating this, I some J seats opened up on the AM 9/17 PVG-HKG so we were able to take that and make our original flight back to LAX. Sadly it was downgraded to the old cabin config A350. wifi was not working, and departed with 1 clogged J bathroom sink and 1 completly in-op J bathroom sink.
In addition to the 5 in our group, we overheard two other FTers who had flown LAX-HKG-BKK Thurs. and back with us today.
